Duties

You will serve as a Telecommunications Mechanic, Infrastructure Maintenance Division, External Support Department, in Norfolk, Va. You will perform inside and outside plant work of the division, which is tasked with accomplishing construction, installation, maintenance, and repair services of fiber optics and copper communications infrastructure. You will use various types of electronic test equipment, analyze system failures, isolate and document causes of outages. You will troubleshoot, test splices for shorts, opens, transposed/reversed pairs, crosses, splits, shield continuity, shield to earth grounds, bonding and grounding, on copper cables. You will maintain accountability of all items, vehicles, tools, and test equipment assigned to the section. You will provide technical support for planned projects consisting of switching and transport networks supporting analog, digital, voice, data, and video teleconference services.

Requirements

  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: THE ABILITY TO WORK WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION such as: Performing the construction, installation, maintenance, and repair services of fiber optic and copper communications infrastructure. Determining vehicles, tools, material requirements, work methods, manpower, and skill requirements to be used to complete assigned work. Reading building blueprints, telephony infrastructure drawings and diagrams. Using tools such as electrical and manual drills, torque wrenches, screwdrivers, long-nosed pliers, fiber optic glass cleavers, and other specialized tools of the trade.
