The registered nurse provides care and counseling of persons or in the promotion and maintenance of health and prevention of illness and injury based upon the nursing process which includes systematic data gathering, assessment, appropriate nursing judgment, and evaluation of human responses to actual or potential health problems through such services as case finding, health teaching, health counseling; provision of care supportive to or restorative of life and well-being.
Duties
This RN is assigned to the GI section of the Department of Nursing VALLHCS. The GI RN- Endoscopy Care Coordinator (ECC) is a professional nurse who provides leadership and assumes continuous responsibility for the development, implementation, coordination, maintenance, and evaluation of patients. The ECC will be responsible for the clinical coordination of the care pre-procedure (both ambulatory and inpatient) of GI patients including chart review, orders, consults, patient education, and all other duties assigned. The GI ECC must be willing to learn and cross cover all Care Coordinator areas and assist with all Care Coordinator workloads. GI Care Coordination ensures that each gastroenterology patient's procedure related appointments, instructions, and preparations are appropriately ordered and obtained, in order to facilitate optimal procedure scheduling, with the special aim of avoiding no-shows and filling cancellations. The GI Care Coordinator will coordinate the scheduling of each patient's procedure and follow up care, to include follow up on biopsy reports, lab reports and clinic appointments. The duties will require making clinical decisions based upon established algorithms and under supervision of a physician. This will include the triaging of consultations and ensuring that care is provided in a timely fashion. The ability to monitor the procedure schedule and to match patient load to available personnel is mandatory. May teach pre-op colonoscopy group classes. Works closely with the Administrative Officer on importing reports in CPRS and Patient Flow Suite (Formerly Consult Tool Management-CTM) or any other designated system per the VHA. The incumbent will require minimal supervision using the nursing process to safely and therapeutically care for patients with obvious as well as subtle needs. Identifies and seeks resolution of patients and related problems using available resources and problem solving skills. Works efficiently with all levels of staff to include collaborative efforts with other health professionals. Must follow all VHA Standard Operating Procedures. Manages daily operations of the program and assists with ensuring facility-wide compliance with VHA Directive 1110.4 Integrated Cases Management Standards of Practice. Must be willing to learn and cross cover all of the technical and clerical skills in the Gastroenterology Section and to cover these areas when personnel are not available.
The GI section provides clinical assessment of veterans who have GI related conditions from swallowing to elimination. The services include evaluation, diagnosis and treatment, follow up, responding to consults, education, and ongoing outreach. This service also participates in clinical research and outcomes. This RN practices in a complex patient care setting in collaboration with colleagues and the nurse manager. The RN is responsible for the delivery of nursing care to the veteran population being treated for multiple specialty diagnosis. The GI nurse must be proficient in patient triage, basic nursing care, and assist with clinic needs and or procedures as needed. The types of patients include but are not limited to the following: Allergy, Cardiology, Dermatology, Diabetes Management, Endocrinology, Infectious Disease, Nephrology, Neurology, Oncology, Preventative Medicine, and Rheumatology.
Basic Life Support (BLS) required for RNs in direct patient/resident care positions per policy. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required in specific specialty areas and assignments per policy. Incumbent will be self-directed in completing orientation and on-going mandatory education. Will actively participate in annual competency assessment and validation. . ACLS and successful completion of LLVA moderate sedation training is required in the GI department. Proficiency in obtaining certification for Accucheck values.
Direct Care Nurse/Staff Nurse: Responsible and accountable for all elements of the nursing process when providing and/or supervising direct patient/resident care. Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates care based on age-specific components. Assumes responsibility for the coordination of care focused on patient/resident/resident transition through the continuum of care, patient/resident and family education, patient/resident self-management after discharge, and supporting factors that impact customer satisfaction. Considers all characteristics of the individual, including age and life stages, state of health, race and culture, values, and previous experiences. Administers medications and procedures per established policies and guidelines. Influences care outcomes by collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team. Core elements of performance include knowledge and active participation in unit/program level quality improvement processes
Work Schedule: 7:30 - 16:00 M-F, or depending on service needs

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Preferred Experience:
Minimum 3 years-RN experience BSN Preferred
GI Clinic and/or Endoscopy procedures experience
Quality Improvement Projects Experience/Committee involvement
ACLS/ BLS
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience.
Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required.
