The Health Technician (Emergency Department) position primary function is to be a member of the Emergency Department team providing compassionate healthcare to veterans.
Duties
The Health Technician will work under the supervision of the Emergency Department nurses and physicians to provide initial screening and stabilization of patients, assist on diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, participate on the organization and maintenance of Emergency Department equipment, move and transport patients at the Emergency Department and through the Medical Center, and respond as part of the Rescue Team.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Acts in the capacity of liaison and as advocate between patients and the registered nurse.
Receives calls and/or direct visitors; responds to inquiries about services and procedures.
Conducts initial screening of the patient arriving to the Emergency Department to determine the nature, extent, and seriousness of the patient's condition while consulting the licensed practitioner (registered nurse or physician).
Takes and records weight. height, intake and output, vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure) including pain level and oxygen saturation. Recognizes abnormalities on vital signs or patients general condition and brings them to the attention of appropriate medical/health care professionals.
Updates Emergency Data Information Software (EDIS) when feasible ..
Administers and set up oxygen tanks.
Inserts a nasopharyngeal or pharyngeal airway.
Perform oral and nasopharyngeal suctioning.
Receive and assist patients that arrive to the Emergency Department in private own vehicles and that need help to get out of the vehicle and into the Emergency Department.
Removes surgical, wound or skin dressing.
Applies a cervical collar when they may be a possible trauma to spine.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Rotating shifts, weekends and holidays

Physical Requirements: The work requires some standing, walking, bending, stooping, lifting and positioning of patients. The work requires above average agility and dexterity. The work may require heavy lifting of items or patients with appropriate equipment.

Individual Occupational Requirement: This position's duties range widely in type and include support duties to medical and health personnel. You must have technician experience which is experience that requires application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the Surgical Technician position to be filled.
In addition to the Individual Occupational Requirement, you may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-XX grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: 1) Promotes infection prevention and control. Demonstrates application of the principles of infection control in all activities (i.e. proper hand washing procedures, etc.). Understands and utilizes standard precautions and uses proper protective equipment. 2) Works and communicates with clients and customers (e.g., any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit provides, including individuals who work in your agency or in other agencies or organizations outside the Government) to satisfy their expectations. Committed to quality services. 3) Knowledge of medical information and/or terminology related to the diagnoses, treatment, and prevention of human injuries and diseases. This includes symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions and preventive health care measures. Understands and uses medical, surgical and/or dental terminology. 4) Knowledge of how to perform one's job. Refers to specialized knowledge that is acquired through formal training or extensive on-the-job experience. 5) Gathers/documents essential and accurate information about patients such as medical history, vital signs, chief complaints, allergies, pertinent health problems, current medications.
There is no educational substitution for the GS-06 level.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
