The Operating Room Surgical Technologist assists the surgeon in performing surgical procedures, and manages/directs the sterile field during the procedure. The OR Surgical Technologist Is responsible for all aspects of the technical preparation for the participation in surgical procedures.

Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to: Possess knowledge of highly technical medical instruments. and aseptic technique to prepare and protect the sterile field during surgery. Process knowledge of a wide variety of complex surgical procedures and possible complications in order to prepare for the procedure, to anticipate the needs of the surgical team, to respond with speed and accuracy, and to report observations and immediate procedural need to the RN circulator. Sufficient knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and protocol to select the correct instruments for a procedure, anticipate the needs of the surgeon during the procedure, and on a regular and recurring basis recognize and respond to a variety of critical situations, including emergency and life threatening conditions. Must have a technical knowledge on the use and effects of anesthesia in order to recognize the hazards of anesthetic agents and to recognize and respond to adverse conditions during the course of the procedure. Handling of pathology specimens are essential for the prevention of damage to or loss of specimen and eventual diagnosis. Perform other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday shifts between 6am-6pm and on call Position Description Title/PD#: Health Technician (Operating Room)/PD672-11358-A Physical Requirements: Duties regularly require providing assistance in lifting and positioning patients, most of whom are at stages of unconsciousness. There are extensive periods of regular and recurring standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, reaching, and prolonged stretching to provide easy accessibility of instruments and supplies for the surgeon. Incumbent must be dexterous in passing instruments to surgeons without compromising principles of aseptic techniques and in a matter requiring little or no effort from the surgeon. Pushing moderately equipment/supplies, which exceed 40 pounds such as; carts, pharmaceutical supplies, boxes that contain supplies. Incumbent be able to manage patient with restraints or emotionally disturbed to prevent aggressive behavior toward others and self. The position requires visual and auditory acuity at a level to enable the incumbent to perform his / her duties.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. GS-07 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: Individual Occupational Requirements: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. In addition to the IOR you may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: 1) Makes sound, well-informed, and objective decisions; perceives the impact and implications of decisions; commits to action, even in uncertain situations, to accomplish organizational goals; causes change. 2) Works and communicates with clients and customers (e.g., any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit provides, including individuals who work in your agency or in other agencies or organizations outside the Government) to satisfy their expectations. Committed to quality services. 3) Solves problems/issues quickly and effectively, involving a methodical step-by-step approach to thinking; breaks down complex problems into single and manageable components and considering each part in detail; Makes a systematic comparison of various alternatives; Notices discrepancies and inconsistencies in available information; Identifies a set of features, parameters, or considerations to take into account. 4) Selects and understands procedures, machines, or tools that will produce the desired results; identifies or solves problems in machines, computers, or other technologies as they are related to performing tasks. Spoken Spanish proficiency 2 years current or recent OR experience with ambulatory basic procedures (Ophthalmology, Podiatry, Urology, Plastic/Hands) BLS Certified Basic Computer Skills (Microsoft Word, Email, etc.) Certified Surgical Technician (CST) Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

There is no educational substitution for the GS-07 level.
