Duties
YOUR RESUME MUST SHOW YOU HAVE EXPERIENCE DOING ROADS AND TRAILS WORK.
These positions work under a trails maintenance leader or other higher-graded position. Full working knowledge of the maintenance functions associated with roads, trails, and grounds, such as filling potholes in roads and parking lots, installing drainage structures on trails, and various landscaping tasks. Uses a variety of equipment such as pneumatic tampers, chainsaws, leaf blowers, push and riding mowers, 4-wheel drive trail vehicles, and other various hand and power tools. Operates gasoline and diesel powered vehicles up to 26,000 pounds GVW while pulling trailer up to 10,000 pounds GVW. Performs maintenance, construction, alterations, and repairs on structures such as foot-bridges, boardwalks, staircases, picnic tables, benches, signs, and parking lot wheel-stops. May be involved in repairing and maintaining roads and parking lots using dump trucks, wheel barrows, asphalt cold-patch, gravel, and sand. Maybe involved in constructing and maintaining trails using chainsaw and/or pole saw, heavy-duty push mowers, various rigging equipment, Pulaski, pick mattock, and shovel. Performs routine maintenance and minor repairs to vehicles and equipment.
Physical Demands: Heavy physical exertion is frequently required in bending, lifting, and using hand and power tools in trail work. Examples of typical strenuous activity, include frequently lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 100 pounds, carrying and rolling rocks and logs, moving rocks of several tons with rock bars, using hammers to crush or shape rock, and using shovels extensively; frequently walks up to 20 miles daily; and must not have potential emergency medical problems that could complicate work in remote areas for extended periods of time.
Working Conditions: Incumbent must have the ability to live and work effectively in isolated backcountry areas in close contact with small numbers of people. Incumbent must live and work out-of-doors on projects including mountainous terrain up to 14,000 feet in elevation in all extremes of weather. Trail work is dusty and hazardous conditions may exist when moving rock, working in and around rock slide areas, working around explosives, falling and bucking trees, and working around machinery.
AREA INFORMATION - Located in northeastern Ohio, Cuyahoga Valley National Park is situated along 22 miles of the Cuyahoga River Valley between the cities of Akron and Cleveland, The area is predominately natural forest and meadow with some areas of agriculture. Winters are moderately cold with average temperatures in the 20 to 30 degree ranges. heavy snowfall is not unusual. Summers are moderately warm, average temperatures in the high 70's and 80's with occasional warm spells in the 90's. Housing is available in several nearby residential communities. Excellent elementary and high schools, numerous colleges, universities and hospitals are available in the area.
