This position is located in the Clinical Trials Program (CTP), Vaccine Research Center (VRC), National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), National Institutes of Health (NIH), US Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).
Duties
As a Nurse (Research Specialist) your duties will include but, are not limited to the following:
Provide leadership in support of CTP clinical and research activities in order to ensure patient safety, address clinical needs, and ensure protocol integrity and accurate data collection;
Facilitate adherence to current regulations, guidance, and policies that affect clinical research at the institutional, state, federal, and international levels;
Independently develop, implement, and manage key procedural/aspects of the protocol within the scientific scope defined by the PI and assist in preparing interim and final reports of protocol scientific findings;
Provide leadership in human subjects protection to the clinical research team;
Define procedures or practices which will be used in the protocol to minimize susceptibility of individuals to undue influences and unnecessary risks (physical, psychological, etc.) as research subjects;
Maintain ongoing informed consent by providing subjects with updated information throughout the study;
Lead research and clinical activities to complete study requirements and manage communications with any primary care providers or potential consultants;
Lead the research team in the development of new ideas for clinical research studies and explore innovations of clinical research that may be applied into practice.
If you are selected at the GS-12 level, you will essentially perform the same duties as those at the full performance level described above, however, duties are less complex and will be performed under closer supervision with more detailed guidance.

Qualifications
In order to qualify for a Nurse (Research Specialist ) GS-610-12/13 position, you must have the following:
Education Requirement:
A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required.
This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (external link), Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs (external link), Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (external link), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained.
Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools (external link) is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.
Licensure Requirement:
You must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN);
AND
Have a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
Additional Qualifications
To qualify for a Nurse (Research Specialist ) GS-610-12 position:
You must have have at least 1 year of Nurse (Research Specialist) experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks:
recruiting and screening new patients and monitoring participant responses to study and clinical treatment; collecting research data/samples and managing specific nursing aspects of clinical protocols within a research program; providing patient and family counseling, health education, and serving as a patient advocate along with other health care professionals; coordinates multi-step evaluations, treatments, or studies with clinical, scientific, or administrative personnel.
To qualify for a Nurse (Research Specialist ) GS-610-13 position:
You must have have at least 1 year of Nurse (Research Specialist) experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: providing guidance in comprehensive nursing, preventative, and therapeutic health care services to patients and family members; managing multiple clinical protocols within a research program (e.g., collecting research data/samples); training nursing staff in the administration of research programs, including the ethical and legal aspects of nursing care and clinical trials; aids in performing quality assurance and quality control activities as they relate to study adherence, study monitoring, data collection, data abstraction, and data analysis.
You will receive credit for all experience material to the position, including experience gained in religious, civic, welfare, service, and organizational activities, regardless of whether you received pay.
