Duties

Joining the Customs and Border Protection Office of Field Operations will allow you to use your expertise in administration to provide advisory and technical services to management in a variety of mission support functional areas. This position starts at a salary of $117,776.00 (GS-12, Step 1) to $153,113.00 (GS-13, Step 10) with promotion potential to $153,113 (GS-13 Step 10). In this Mission Support Specialist position, you will become a key team member of Homeland Security professionals analyzing and refining existing work methods and developing new methods and procedures. Typical work assignments include: Providing expert level advice in in a variety of mission support functional areas. Providing authoritative guidance and expert technical advice in a variety of mission support functional areas for a Field Office or large Port of Entry. Analyzing disputed, interrelated information that must be reconstructed from circumstantial evidence, requiring substantial depth of analysis over a relatively short period. Maintaining sources of firsthand information on developments, trends, and significant policy and legal decisions in assigned specialty area(s).

Experience: You qualify for the GS-12 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as: Conducting studies to develop responses to management on new requirements in program operations, legislation, or agency regulations. Evaluating pertinent legislation and new or revised policies or directives from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and other agencies. Conducting studies concerning organization-wide and/or government wide management issues. Providing advice and guidance to points of contact at agency headquarters and in the field. Experience: You qualify for the GS-13 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as: Providing authoritative guidance and expert technical advice in a variety of mission support areas for a Field Office or large Port of Entry. Developing details plans, goals, and objectives for the long-range implementation and administration of Office of Field Operations and recommending solutions and actions to improve processes. Advising on complex problems and issues that typically require analyzing and/or troubleshooting a wide range of unusual conditions. Conducting studies to develop responses to management on new requirements in program operations, legislation, or agency regulations. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must: Meet all qualification requirements, including education if applicable to this position, subject to verification at any stage of the application process; and Meet all applicable Time in Grade requirements (current federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent grade band in the federal service) by 01/10/2024. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. Current and former federal employees may be required to serve or complete a probationary period. Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) Eligibles: If you have never worked for the federal government, you are not CTAP eligible.
