Program Support Assistants (PSA) within Medical Service may be assigned to any of the several programs as workload dictates. PSAs coordinate data and communication flow among the clinical and administrative staff and provide clerical and computer support within the service. Assignment of duties is often dependent on current environment and most require increasing amount of responsibility and autonomy.
Duties
Major duties include but are not limited to the following:
Performs work involving the collection, compilation, and/or tracking of data and statistical information in support of an organization's program operation.
Prepares, executes, and/or tracks program specific information, such as quarterly, monthly and daily report information, Internal Management Report and data for the Decision Support System (DSS).
Uses software applications to draw information [e.g., Veterans Health Information Systems & Technology Architecture (VISTA), Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS), and the World Wide Web] in order to prepare/assist in preparation of reports.
Performs work related to the acquisition and/or development of program information and resource materials/personnel to support the policy development and/or technical activities of an organization.
Researches various publications to extract, summarize, and compile information required for the activities of the organization.
Maintains computerized data systems for the purpose of interpreting managerial and operational reports and resolving deficiencies in such reports. Also maintains computerized data systems for the purpose of timekeeping, inputting information, collecting and collating data for management reports, and assuring proper maintenance and security procedures are followed.
Answers phones, evaluates the urgency of the calls, and directs calls to the appropriate individual; troubleshoots patient problems and concerns; and greets visitors.
Keeps an accurate calendar of staff and program events; create and update inventory of office supplies; and assure the smooth functioning of day-to-day operations.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.

Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items such as papers, books, small parts; or driving an automobile, etc. No special physical demands are required to perform the work. Some lifting, bending and handling of medical records are required.

GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: performs general office tasks within an office setting such as receives and screens telephone calls, operates a computer and software applications, performs data entry, maintains spreadsheets and reports, follows written instruction and provides customer service; monitors suspense dates.
Education
There is no educational substitution for the GS-06 grade level.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
