You will serve as a Supervisory Nuclear Engineer in the Nuclear Engineering and Planning Department (NEPD) at PSNS and IMF.

Duties

You will provide administrative and technical supervision for a branch within the Nuclear Engineering and Planning Department (NEPD). You will provide first line supervision for the group of subordinate nuclear engineers and/or technicians assigned to the branch. You will appropriately use coaching, encouraging, mentoring, and directing forms of leadership. You will promote collaboration and teamwork. You will promote and facilitate continuous learning and development of branch employees. You will participate in developing training for the branch, division, and the department. You will obtain advanced knowledge of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program and nuclear systems. You will, for first time nuclear work, approve preliminary plans for accomplishment and risk assessments prior to management review and approval. You will ensure safety regulations are followed and personnel protection equipment is worn in required areas and on the deck plate, at all times. You will make risk based decisions and effectively identify and mitigate risk. You will investigate and resolve deficiencies using a systems approach, understanding the immediate problem, as well as underlying causes and other areas that could be affected. You will continually assess branch workload and mitigate imbalances through effective use of overtime, resource allocation, and gained efficiencies.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a professional Engineer guiding the work of teams of engineers for assignments, projects or processes by ensuring mechanisms such as training, mentoring, procedures, and/or accountability are in place to maintain, modernize, or retire nuclear-powered ships or submarines. Education

Applicants must meet the following basic education requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual:

Successful completion of a professional engineering degree. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree (or higher) in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET); or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. Such education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.

Current registration as an Engineer Intern (EI), Engineer in Training (EIT), or licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) by any State, the District of Columbia, Guam, or Puerto Rico. Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified in the basic requirements under paragraph A (above). Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field, e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a bachelor's degree in engineering, provided the applicant has had at least one year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance. Ordinarily, there should be either an established plan of intensive training to develop professional engineering competence, or several years of prior professional engineering-type experience, e.g., in interdisciplinary positions.
