This position is located at the Branch Health Clinic USS Red Rover at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago, IL. The primary purpose of this position is to provide immunizations and documentation support to Navy recruits at Recruit Training Command in a safe and competent manner.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: Confirming patient identity and screening for contraindications, providing prescribed vaccines and medications to eligible patients; Administering oral, intradermal, intranasal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular medication; with proper dosage drawn up as ordered by provider or specification in the standing orders; Educating patients regarding each vaccine prior to administration in accordance with the vaccination information statements (VIS); Recognizing vaccination or injection-related adverse health effects ranging from vaso-vagal response to anaphylaxis and responding calmly and appropriately in an emergency; Promoting and assisting in the dissemination of information to patients regarding vaccine information, instructions on what to do if reactions occur post-vaccination; Operating specialized medical equipment associated with the assigned clinic and commensurate with training (including AED, pulse oximeter, blood pressure cuff, electronic thermometer, oxygen administration, wheelchairs, etc.); Preparing immunizations requests as ordered by providers or standing order vaccine protocols; Entering and retrieving data from vaccination and health records and databases; Taking care of patients in a safe, efficient, and orderly manner and ensuring patients receive vaccinations in accordance with established dosing schedules; Assisting in the orientation of new personnel; Establishing and maintaining stock levels of all equipment, forms, and consumable supplies necessary to fulfil the purpose of the immunization section; Providing administrative support to include accurate maintenance of logs and tracking databases, patient reception, and answering telephones; Complying with infection control guidelines and practices, universal precautions/hand hygiene, and DoD and Navy directives applicable to infection control, hand hygiene, and needle stick prevention; Performing a variety of clerical tasks, to include typing and filling; Preparing report of vaccine adverse effects to the preventative medicine division; and Performing other duties as assigned. Qualifications

Minimum Requirement: Specialized Experience (GS-5): You must have one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-4). Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. Qualifying examples of specialized experience include providing patient care, confirming patient identity, screening for contraindications, and recording health care information into medical records. (CLEAR DETAILS OF EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: Your resume must show complete information for each job entry, such as beginning and ending dates of employment, duties performed, and/or total hours worked per week.) OR, Education (GS-5): Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. NOTE: One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school. OR, Combination (GS-5): Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have a combination of specialized experience and education as described above. Note: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: Work is typically sedentary in an office, although stooping, walking, stair climbing and moderate lifting and carrying are required, along with reaching and prolonged standing, and providing necessary patient assistance. Manual dexterity is required. Incumbent is exposed to everyday risks and hazards of the medical profession (blood borne pathogens, infectious disease).
