Located in the Emergency Department, the Immediate Care Technician is an occupational specialty especially for former military medics, medical technicians, and corpsmen. The activities for the hospital will include but not be limited to triage, appropriate patient documentation, laboratory testing, procedures, wound care, medication administration, assisting clinical providers with emergency medical care, emergency response team, and assistance with training of other hospital staff.
Duties
Typical duties include but are not limited to:
Performs diagnostic tests: Vital Signs, EKG, Nero and Vascular Exam.
Evaluates patients (under the direction of the supervising physician).
Recognizes life-threatening situations and act to correct these according to established protocols.
Administers medication: Nebulized Medications, Topical, IV Fluids, Limited PO Meds, IM Injections, Vaccines.
Performs the following:
peripheral IV
Arterial Puncture (ABG),
Intervenors Access
EJs Insertion
Venipuncture
NG Tube Placement
Nasogastric Lavage
Anterior Nasal Packing
Rapid Rhino
Ear Irrigation- Cerumen and Foreign Body Removal
Eye Irrigation
Incision & Drainage of abscesses and Subungual Hematoma Drainage
Suture/Staple removal
Foley Catheters Insertion and Bladder Irrigation
Splinting/ Casting
Wound Care: Wound Debridement, Wet-to-Dry Dressings, Unna Boot Placement, Compression Dressings- Forflex and Profour, Wound Vac Placement, Graft Application.
Tracheotomy Care
Specimen Collection and Preparation: for processing including blood, tissue, urine, stool, and sputum.
Work Schedule: Nights - 7:15 PM to 7:45 AM with rotation on weekends and holidays

Physical Requirements: The work involves extended periods of heavy moving and lifting of patients and equipment. Generally, the work requires recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, and positioning of patients.

Specialized Experience for the GS-07: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Practical knowledge of major body systems to include skeletal, muscular, nervous, respiratory, circulatory, digestive and genitourinary; Obtaining patient health history, chief complaints, medication history, and identification of health related conditions that may impact the patient's health status; Performing diagnostic tests such as vital signs and EKG; Evaluating patients for emergent/non-emergent medical conditions, ordering appropriate diagnostic studies and performing a wide range of treatment procedures under the direction of the supervising physician; Conducting point of care testing; Administrating of: Oxygen, Basic IV fluids, Nebulized medications, limited PO meds, IM meds/immunizations/vaccines; Independently recognizing life threatening situations and act to correct these according to established national or facility protocols.
Graduate education (Masters level) may be used to substitute for specialized experience only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position.
