About the Position: This position is located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.
Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service.
Non-Federal work experience may be creditable for leave purposes.
Duties
Complete special assignments such as preparing ground, laying sod, or planting flowers or shrubs using detailed procedures.
Perform heavy laboring tasks which require significant manual skill and very heavy physical effort.
Review assigned project or plan to determine and select the most appropriate type of equipment to accomplish each phase of the work in the most productive and cost-effective manner.
Use simple drawings to establish a planting design for flowers or shrubs.
Operate large, complex riding lawn mowers and similar types of specialized mowing and snow equipment (e.g., multiple and independently controlled cutting decks) and/or specially designed riding mowers that operate on slopes.
Operate various controls and levers to maneuver equipment and lift, lower, adjust, engage, and disengage components or attached devices when working around trees, trenches, large potholes, slopes, curbs, rocks, and other visible obstacles.
Utilize safety practices and procedures to maintain a safe and clean work environment.
Use and assure proper fit of required safety equipment and clothing (e.g., safety gloves, ear plugs, safety glasses, steel-toe shoes, or respirators).
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required.
- Moderate to heavy lifting up to 50 pounds is required.
- Must possess and maintain a valid stateside driver's license.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Laborer without more than normal supervision. The ability to perform common landscaping tasks. Operate riding mowers and similar types of mowing and snow equipment. Maneuver equipment in areas that require constant attention to working space and environment (e.g., equipment height and width when working around trees, trenches, large potholes, slopes, curbs, rocks, and other visible obstacles). Follow instructions to lay sod and plant flowers or shrubs. Work under supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who reviews work for completion. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Effort: Exerts very heavy physical effort in operating large, riding mowers on grades and in areas with bushes, trees, and other visible obstacles that require significant maneuvering and lever control. Some arm and leg movement is required to manipulate equipment controls. Employee frequently lifts and moves equipment and components weighing over 50 pounds (23 kilograms).
Working Conditions: Work is performed outside in all kinds of weather and inside in areas that may be dusty, drafty, and noisy. The equipment, tools, and tasks involved frequently require extreme care and use of safety gloves, ear plugs, safety glasses, steel-toe shoes, or respirators to avoid severe injury such as fractures, severe cuts, and back strain.
