The Journeyman level incumbent for this position serves as an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic within the Facilities Management at the VA Medical Center in St. Cloud, MN. The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic is responsible for installing, troubleshooting, performing preventative maintenance and repairing all HVAC&R (heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration) equipment and controls.

Duties

This occupation is currently approved for a Veterans Health Administration enterprise-wide Critical Skills Incentive through 10/05/2024. Candidates may be eligible for a lump sum CSI for a pro-rated amount if onboard prior to the CSI expiration date. Eligible candidates will be required to sign a service agreement agreeing to an obligated service period and failure to complete the obligated service period may result in a debt for the unearned portion of the CSI. As a Journeyman AC Equipment Mechanic your duties can include but are not limited to the following: Work at this level involves installing, recognizing the cause of faulty equipment, and making repairs on large systems that provide for a variety of air conditioning functions such as heating, cooling, humidifying, dehumidifying, cleaning and filtering for comfort cooling and heating. These systems service such areas as communication centers, electronic data processing centers, operating rooms, laboratories, clean rooms, sterile processing and (sterile) storage and other areas with sensitive equipment. The incumbent acts independently to install, overhaul, repair and perform preventative maintenance on a variety of commercial equipment and controls. The equipment serviced and maintained include, but not be limited to, variable frequency controllers and drives, microprocessor programing and setup, electro pneumatic receivers and controllers, pneumatic hybrid electric and electronic controls, sensors and alarms involved with large and small air conditioning systems, air handling units, chillers, pumps, compressors and other similar equipment integral to refrigeration, ventilation and energy management systems incorporating building automation. Operating and repairing all aspects of the environmental control system to include adding and removing points in the system, building graphics, modifying and troubleshooting programming, repairing and replacing sensors, actuators and other control devices, and repairing and replacing LAN devices such as terminal equipment controllers; and Troubleshooting, diagnosing and making repairs to a large variety of equipment and systems that provide a variety of air-conditioning functions, such as heating, cooling, humidification, dehumidification and air cleaning, filtering and circulating. Knowledge in the use and programming of Building Controls and Automations Systems-CMMS - Computerized Maintenance Management System, and associated controls such as DDC (direct digital control), BMS systems such as Johnson Controls Meta system, and the use of the HVAC/R computer or laptop to monitor and make adjustments to programing of systems and equipment as may be required to monitor and maintain proper operation. Required to set or make adjustments to building air handling equipment and subsystems schedules; and programing for occupied/unoccupied modes, auto-zero of dampers, economization, system setbacks, and proportional -integral-derivative controllers, programmable logic controllers. Mechanic is responsible for the acknowledgement of, and corrective actions to alarm situations that occur within the building automation network. Incumbent does highly complex troubleshooting for walk-in-coolers; freezers; air conditioning systems, heating and chilled water closed loop systems, direct expansion systems, and a working knowledge and a fundamental understanding of geothermal systems, automation and control of such system and subsystems that incorporate AHU's, heating and cooling loops and seasonal automation and control. Physical Requirements: Work is accomplished throughout the Medical Center physical plant, both inside and outdoors. Incumbent must be able to reach any and all places as necessary to view and inspect all equipment and component parts. Duties require standing, stooping, bending, walking, kneeling, crawling, and unusual and cramped positions on a continual basis. Work is performed from ladders, scaffolding and aerial lift platforms. Occasionally may lift objects weighing over 50pounds.Physical exertion related to actions such as lifting, pushing, pulling or carrying objects for varying weights, sizes and shapes. Physical effort related to movements such as walking, running, climbing, crawling and bending. Strain related to lack of movement such as standing in place, crouching or stooping for extended periods of time. Working Conditions: Frequently exposed to hazards including moving objects, elevation, high and low voltage conductors and components, operating machines, toxic fumes, high and low temperatures, etc., for short durations. Subject to injuries such as cuts, bums, electrical shock, falls, bruises, etc. Work is performed inside and outside and may be performed in inclement weather. Outside work is regulated to avoid the inclement weather if possible. All work is governed by VA Safety Guidelines and PPE requirements.
