About the Position: The Airfield Operations Specialist is responsible for maintaining liaison with military, federal, and local agencies concerning airspace utilization, flying operations, aircraft emergencies, search and rescue operations, and natural disasters. This position is located at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM), WA.

Duties

Conduct briefings to communicate information required by aviators. Provide detailed assistance to pilots planning route of flight, preparation of flight plans/flight computations, and obtaining a clearance to fly in controlled airspace. Provide aircrews with information and assistance, necessary for planning and conducting safe flight operations. Responsible for coordinating and maintaining liaison with military, federal, and local agencies concerning airspace utilization, flying operations, aircraft emergencies, search and rescue operations, and natural disasters. Provide direct support to unit and other military and civilian aircrews, during scheduled and unscheduled flying and ground activities.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license.
  • This position has been identified as being mission essential required to report for duty during inclement weather, natural disasters, and other emergency situations as directed by the Senior Leadership.
  • This position may be required to remain on duty after the official shift ends, i.e., mandatory overtime.
  • This position requires irregular hours of work, and rotating shifts to include nights, weekends, and holidays with high periods of stress. Subject to changes in shift assignments following regulated notice periods.
  • Temporary Duty Travel (TDY) may be required up to 10% of the time.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing. Tentatively selected applicants will be required to sign a DA Form 5019 requiring participation in random drug urinalysis testing.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment and periodic medical examinations.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Flight-line Driver's License per AR 95-2

Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes Demonstrated experience 1.) Gathering information to brief aircrew regarding airport/airfield area ground and airspace issues; 2.) Conducting routine Airfield/Airport Inspections for safety, security, and operational functionality, and 3.) Coordinating, and de-conflicting the movement of aircraft and/or ground equipment through the use of electronic and radio equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: accounting, business administration, business or commercial law, commerce, economics, engineering, finance, industrial management, statistics, traffic management, transportation, motor mechanics, nautical science, marine affairs, marine engineering, marine transportation, or other fields related to the position. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
