Serves as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist in the Nuclear Medicine Service. Responsible for independently performing a full range of routine, non-routine general Nuclear Medicine, Nuclear Cardiology, Radiotherapy and PET/CT, SPECT/CT, Bone Densitometry, as well as in-vivo procedures such as 111-ln WBC labeling, research and in vitro radionuclide studies.
Duties
Major duties:
Performs a wide range of procedures to include General Nuclear Medicine, Nuclear Cardiology, Radiotherapy, SPECT/CT, Bone Densitometry and PET/CT, Bone Densitometry and PET/CT.
Performs computer acquisition and analysis of data. Selects and modifies programs to acquire patient studies. Analyzes images and
participates in research studies.
Selecting imaging and preparing the instrument for the procedure and recognizing artifacts that are due to malfunction and initiating appropriate action.
Checks for interfering objects or contamination.
Evaluates images and computer-generated data and determines if additional or different views are needed to establish a definite
diagnosis.
Assists the nuclear medicine physician and RSO in performing all therapeutic procedures to include 1-131 radioiodine therapy (hyperthyroidism and ablation), Sr-89 palliative therapy for metastatic bone pain and Bexar therapy for lymphoma.
Responsible for all analysis and storage in listed PACS and Vista Imaging of patient data related to
their assigned work area.
Evaluates the performance of the nuclear instrumentation by calibrates, standardizes, adjusts and maintains imaging cameras and doses calibrators.
Verifies by means of a radioactive flood source, the uniformity of response of the photomultiplier tubes in the imaging detector.
Performs detector spatial resolution and linearity using bar and lines phantoms.
Ascertains that the camera is peaked for the proper energy emission of the specific radionuclide used in the study.
Checks the sensitivity of the detector using a long-lived calibrator standard. Performs accuracy and linearity checks to verify that the dose calibrator is accurate with respect to absolute quantities of radioactivity and that it's response to varying levels of radioactivity is
linear.
Prepares the patient for bone density scanning by explaining the procedure, obtaining relevant patient history (including height/weight) and having patient remove all artifact producing objects.
Work Schedule: Rotatory tour including Saturdays and Holiday (could be from 6:30am to as the starting working hour until 3:00pm to 6:30pm).

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency: Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G27.
Certification: You must be certified in nuclear medicine technology by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) or the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (N). NMTCB or ARRT (N) certification eligibility requirements are normally satisfied by one of the following: Completion of a NMTCB-recognized nuclear medicine technology program OR; Completion of a nuclear medicine technology program accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology (JRCNMT), or other accrediting agencies as recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (DOE), culminating in a certificate, associate, baccalaureate, or master's degree. Educational programs must have structured clinical training sufficient to provide clinical competency in radiation safety, instrumentation, clinical procedures, and radio-pharmacy, as deemed acceptable by the NMTCB.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations:
GS-11- The candidate must have1 year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This would be experience which provided ability to document excessive radiation exposure in the working environment; Knowledge of medical events requiring documentation and the ability to properly document them and make recommendations to the radiation safety officer (RSO); Ability to communicate orally and in writing post iodine-131 therapy radiation safety precautions; Ability to troubleshoot gamma camera and auxiliary equipment problems.; Ability to analyze computer generated data for technical quality and artifacts and initiate corrective measures.
