The Research Health Scientist (Clinical) will be assigned to the ACOS/Research & Development Service, Veterans Health Administration, VA Caribbean Healthcare System, Department of Veterans Affairs, San Juan, PR.
Duties

Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:
Functions as an independent research investigator and is responsible for original research efforts as the Principal Investigator on a research project funded by the VHA, NIH, DOD, CDMRP, and HRSA among other entities.
Originates hypotheses and develops research protocols.
Interprets data and uses results of this work as the basis for generating manuscripts for publication, reports, papers and presentations for scientific meetings.
Directs technical staff involved in this research program.
Presents original scientific data to professional and research societies at local, national and/or international meetings
Serves as editor/reviewer for scientific journals; reviews research proposals for funding agencies.
Makes contributions to the current literature in the field.
Provides guidance and training to students, fellows, and others within the Healthcare System conducting clinical research..
Ensures that all studies proposed are carried out to completion under the appropriate conditions and will participate directly in the performance of such experiments.
Provides professional advice to members of the medical profession in laboratory diagnosis and interpretation of laboratory findings related to neuroscience. Be responsible for interpretation of findings as well as for the preparation of abstracts and manuscripts.
Coordinates the procurement of supplies, equipment, and instrumentation and assures compliance with budgetary limitations.
Assesses operation costs and provides budget input for projects submissions..
Participates in the training of undergraduate and/or medical students involved in federal student research programs.
Participates, when asked to join, as a member of the Institutional Review Boar (IRB) and the Research and Development Committee (R&DC).
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm.

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT - Applicants must possess a bachelor's degree (or higher) with major study in an academic field related to the health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of this position. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: In addition to meeting the above requirements, applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped them with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes having an understanding of a wide range of concepts, principles, and practices; having skills in applying this knowledge to the development of new methods, approaches, or procedures in the design, development, and coordination of research projects or clinical studies; capable of performing complex analytical studies and interpretation of results; ability to communicate, both orally and in writing, to make presentations, explain recommendations, represent the agency and assigned program areas; providing guidance and advise program administrators, respond to inquiries, and prepare reports.
