The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is April through October but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: April 2024.

Duties

The incumbent will be the leader of a trail maintenance crew providing leadership and guidance on multiple projects happening at the same time. Incumbent will perform journeyman level work in trail maintenance, dry and wet stone masonry, trail construction, bridge construction and rigging tasks and provide direction, oversight and supervision to employees. Performs camp maintenance and management tasks including camp layout and all aspects of camp moves and setup. Incumbent is responsible for transporting and operating mid-duty equipment such as skid steer tractors, mini excavators and backhoe loaders. Incumbent will design simple trail projects, prepare estimates for labor, supplies, materials and contracted services.This position requires hiking long distances daily and travel to remote work sites throughout Yosemite National Park, and will be required to live with work crew in remote wilderness setting for months at a time. Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is required in bending, lifting and using hand and power tools in trail work. Examples of typical strenuous activity include: frequently lifts and carries objects weighing over 100 pounds, must carry and roll rocks and logs, move rocks of several tons with rock bars, use hammers to crush or shape rock, and use a shovel extensively. Frequently hikes up to 20 miles daily, and must be able to do so while carrying a backpack, power and/or hand tools. Working Conditions: Incumbent must have the ability to live and work effectively in backcountry areas in close contact with small numbers of people for extended periods of time. Incumbent must life and work out-of-doors on projects in various terrain up to 13,000 feet elevation in all extremes of adverse weather conditions. Trail work is dusty, hazardous conditions may exist when moving rocks, logs, working in and around rockslide areas, working around stock, working around explosives, falling and bucking trees, and working around machinery.

SELECTIVE FACTOR: This position requires regular and recurring work and camping in rugged mountainous backcountry above 7,000 ft elevation for extended periods of time. Selectees must be able to hike by foot in the backcountry at high altitude for extended periods of time while carrying backpacks, tools and supplies of at least 50 lbs, and be able to camp for several days at a time, as stated in resume. This experience must clearly be stated in your resume or other application documents, or you may be found ineligible. -AND- Ability to lead (Screen out): Federal Wage Leaders must have the ability to lead three or more other workers to accomplish work, including as a paramount requirement, sufficient skill in and knowledge of the type of work performed by the group led to effectively carry out the duties. Working leaders also perform regular nonsupervisory (i.e., non-leader) work that is usually of the same kind and level as that done by the group led. Typical duties of a working leader are: passing on to other workers the instructions received from supervisors and getting work started, e.g., by assigning the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the group led; working along with other workers and setting the pace; demonstrating proper work methods; seeing to it that needed plans, blueprints, materials, and tools are available, and that needed stock is obtained from supply locations; obtaining needed information or decisions from supervisors on problems that come up during the work; maintaining a current knowledge, and answering questions of other workers on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives (for example, technical orders); seeing to it that there is enough work to keep everyone in the work crew busy; checking work while in progress and when finished to see whether the supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met; urging or advising other workers to follow instructions received from supervisors, and to meet deadlines; assuring that safety and housekeeping rules are followed (for example, assuring that limits of safe machine operation are not exceeded and that all tools are used properly); reporting to supervisors on status and progress of work, and causes of work delays; and answering questions of supervisors on overall work operations and problems (for example, concerning, additional on-the-job training requirements for individual employees).
