Duties
Code disease and injury diagnoses, acuity of care, and procedures in a wide range of ambulatory/outpatient settings and specialties.
Perform qualitative analysis of the records to ensure accuracy, internal consistency and correlation of recorded data.
Determine that diagnostic and procedural terminology used is consistent with currently acceptable medical nomenclature.
Assign additional diagnosis codes based on specific clinical findings (laboratory reports, radiology reports, pathology reports and clinical studies) in support of existing diagnoses.
Oversee the coding function for the Ambulatory Data Module and Coding Compliance Editor, while ensuring proper input of data into a computer system.
Audit medical records to ensure all diagnoses and procedures are properly documented according to the official ICD-10-CM coding guidelines and DOD specific requirements.
Resolve problems and refers back to providers those records appearing to have omissions or sequencing questions.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes coding medical diagnosis and procedures, conducting audits of medical records for accuracy of coding, and performing clerical and administrative support functions within in medical treatment facility. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
