About the Position: Serve as a Medical Records Technician (MRT) in a non-teaching hospital, that provides clinical services in over 20 medical specialties. Perform assignments in the following areas of responsibility: Tumor Registry; auditing and analyzing of records for correct coding; educating and training medical providers to improve coding accuracy; trend analysis; program evaluation; advisory service; quality assurance; and statistical coding.

Duties

Possess an extensive knowledge of ambulatory coding, complex medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, an overall knowledge of accreditation references, DoD requirements and Army medical regulations. Perform assignments in the following areas of responsibility: Tumor Registry; coding; trend analysis; program evaluation; advisory service; quality assurance; and statistical coding. As Tumor Registrar, performs a wide variety of technical duties necessary for the development and analysis of diagnostic and therapeutic cancer data. Abstract and manage data entered in the Automated Cancer Tumor Registry (ACTUR). Audit medical records to ensure all diagnoses and procedures are properly documented accordingto the official ICD-9-CM coding guidelines and DOD specific requirements. Review electronic or handwritten documentation of diagnoses and procedures entered into the coding database. Provide feedback regarding inconsistencies, discrepancies, omissions, and sequencing to the Medical Record Administrator. Conduct education briefings on coding; assist in the development and deployment of entry-level training programs; and advise and educate medical staff on proper documentation practices.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Travel (TDY) outside of the commuting area up to 5% of the time.
  • This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5-minute sample with three or fewer errors.

Specialized experience is defined as: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service which includes gathering and compiling a variety of data in medical records; documenting patient diagnosis and/or procedures entered in a coding database; and assisting with audits of coded records to provide feedback to providers in a Medical Treatment Facility.
