Position is available at the GS-05 or GS-07 level. Either may be filled, or not, based on funding and park need. This position is not developmental in nature. If you want to be considered for the higher grade, you must apply to the higher grade.

This Park Ranger - Preventative Search and Rescue (PSAR) position is in the Visitor and Resource Protection Division at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.
GS-5 Major Duties:
Performing a variety of tasks associated with the implementation of the PSAR program, including visitor education, peer education, office work, and implementation of PSAR messaging projects. The employee will advise visitors concerning hiking safety, heat illness, accident prevention, and proper preparation for outdoor activities. This park ranger will assist with training other employees about PSAR and hiking safety.
Performs Search and Rescue (SAR) duties, including trail response, hiker assists, litter carry outs, water rescues, ground/hasty search, EMS Response, and radio operations.
GS-7 Major Duties:
In addition to the GS-5 Major Duties, the GS-7 will train, mentor, and coach lower-graded employees, partners, volunteers, interns, and the public with informal and formal training regarding PSAR-related policies, practices, processes, etc.
Review standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the implementation of PSAR-related systems, processes, and procedures.
Performs more complex operational assignments, requiring initiative and resourcefulness to carry out day to day planning and execution, or to oversee the execution of operational assignments.
Manage the preventive search and rescue volunteer program and provide leadership and direction to volunteers.
Participate as a member of the parks technical rescue team.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-12/29/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.
To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one year (12 months) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level in the federal service. Specialized experience demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of a Park Ranger (PSAR). Specialized experience may be technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park-related work. Specialized experience includes, but is not limited to the following. You must include start/end dated and hours per week worked.
Emergency services (emergency medical response, search and rescue, emergency dispatch)
Park Guide / Tour Leader
Law enforcement
Fire management (wildland and/or structural)
Management, information dissemination, programming in parks, conservation area, reserve, or similar area (fee collection, entrance station, backcountry office, visitor use assistant, volunteer, visitor information desk, campground ranger)

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least four years of education above high school (120 semester hours or equivalent) leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or 24 semester hours of course work in a related field, such as natural resource management, natural sciences, earth science, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. You must include transcripts.

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above equaling at least 100%. You must include start/end dated and hours per week worked. You must include transcripts.
To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:

Related course work are subjects such as natural resource management, natural sciences, earth science, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. You must include transcripts.

EDUCATION: I qualify under education with Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.) as evidenced by one of the three following methods: I am in the upper third of my graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses; OR I have a GPA 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum, or 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in my major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; OR I am a member in one of the national scholastic honor societies.
