Supervisory Social Worker responsible for the coordination of the Inpatient Social Work and supervision of all social work personnel responsible for discharge planning and long-term placement options. They are responsible for the professional and administrative management of the Inpatient Team and other programs under supervision in social work service at the Robley Rex Medical Center and provides direct clinical services.
Duties
Supervisory Social Worker responsible for the coordination of the Inpatient Social Work and supervision of all social work personnel responsible for discharge planning and long-term placement options. Acts as a Supervisory Social Worker who provides administrative, technical, and clinical supervision necessary for accomplishing the work of the overall SWS department per the direction of the Chief of Social Work Service.
Major duties include but are not limited to:
Collaborates with human resource specialist as well as AFGE leadership demonstrating expert knowledge and skill in management/administration to include supervision, consultation, negotiation, and monitoring regarding complex issues related to staff labor relations.
Work across departmental lines to collaborate with and direct discharge planning options with social workers in the GEC and MH & Behavioral Science as well as any other care lines where social workers may need consultation and assistance regarding discharge planning and long-term care needs and resources.
Performs program analysis, development, review, research, design, and contact work as possible with various agencies (public, local, state, etc.).
Advises Care Line Managers/Chiefs on problems involving the relationship of Inpatient Med/Surg and related social work activities in the various units and programs in which the subordinate staff function.
Develops policy and procedures to ensure compliance with but not limited to federal, state, and local nursing home regulations; Veterans Health Administration Policy; Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations; National Association of Social Workers; Office of Inspector General, and Clinical State Board of Social Work Licensing for the purpose of identifying, interpreting, and writing requirements into the medical center
policies and procedures for compliance.
Develops and implements information systems to track service activities including resident satisfaction, quality of care, safety, compliance with documentation standards, and care
requirements in accordance with national social work guidelines.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education: Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully
accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of
social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of
Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted
for the master's degree in social work.
Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series
in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at
the master's degree level.
Grade Determinations: Supervisory Social Worker, GS-13
Experience/Education: One year of experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. Candidate may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience.
Examples of experience: At this grade level, Supervisory Social Worker has specialized knowledge of practice typically related to the nursing population, with particular concern to age and diagnosis of appropriate treatment and care. This will be primarily an elderly population with serious and often chronic medical conditions and dementias.
Licensure/Certification: Individuals assigned as supervisory social workers must be
licensed or certified at the advanced practice level, and must be able to provide supervision for licensure.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience
above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
(a) Ability to independently organize work, set priorities, and meet multiple deadlines.
(b) Skill in a range of supervisory duties which includes clinical supervision, consultation, negotiation with other departments and quality improvement.
(c) Ability to ensure provision of clinical social work services by supervised social workers.
(d) Ability to delegate authority, manage priorities, coordinate work, and follow up on pending issues to complete duties in an accurate and timely fashion.
(e) Ability to analyze organizational and operational problems, develop and implement solutions that result in efficient operations, and use data effectively to manage workload, quality, performance, and productivity within the service.
(f) Ability to provide staff training and development.
Preferred Experience: At least 2 years of specialized social work practice with the geriatric population
