The position is within the Sleep Diagnostic & Treatment Center, Pulmonary/Sleep Medicine Section, Medical Surgical Patient Care Center at the James J. Peters Bronx VA Medical Center, with the principal responsibility being performance of overnight polysomnography. The incumbent serves as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)/Sleep Technician and performs her/his duties under the supervision of the Director, Sleep Diagnostic & Treatment Center. BLS/ACLS certification required.
Duties
The principal responsibility for this position for which prior experience is required will be performance of overnight polysomnography (six 12-hour overnight shifts + additional 8-hours) amounting to 80 hours across a two week pay period within our 2-bed Sleep Diagnostic & Treatment Center at the James J. Peters VAMC, a teaching affiliate of the Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, N.Y. Salary for this RRT hybrid position is competitive at the Grade 11 level. Although having an RRT degree or equivalent is a prerequisite, the position will focus almost exclusively on performance of polysomnography and potentially other functions pertaining to the operation of the sleep center such as home sleep studies setups, PAP setups, etc. Experience scoring sleep studies is a plus, but not required. Certification as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) or equivalent is desired, but not required.

Work Schedule: Six 12-hr overnights + one 8-hr day or two 4-hour days every 2 weeks, flexible. Tour of duty to be determined by Supervisor.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:
Citizenship. Citizen of the United States (U.S.). Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g, of this part. See 38 U.S.C. § 7407(a) for more information.
Education. Individuals must have successfully completed a respiratory care program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) or its successor.
Licensure. Persons appointed or reassigned to RRT positions in the GS-0601 series must possess and maintain for the duration of employment a full, current and unrestricted license from a state to practice as an RRT.
Credential. Persons appointed or reassigned to RRT positions in the GS-0601 series must possess and maintain for the duration of employment a valid, current, unrestricted credential of RRT.
Note on loss of Licensure, Certification or Credentials, an employee in this occupation, who fails to maintain the required certifications, RRT credential or license must be removed from the occupation, which may also result in the termination of employment. Once credentialed, licensed or certified, RTs/RRTs must maintain a full, valid and unrestricted license, credential and certification to practice respiratory care

Physical Demands: The work will fluctuate from sedentary to moderate physical requirements, requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as standing or walking for prolonged periods of time; frequent bending, reaching, stooping, and stretching to set up and take apart respiratory equipment and apparatus; lifting and repositioning patients; and pushing or pulling heavy objects such as oxygen tanks and or ventilator equipment > 25lbs, lifting from the knees
