This position is located within the Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center (VAMC) in Bronx, NY.
Duties

Major duties include, but are not limited to:
Conducts scientifically sound, cutting edge health services research to improve the care for the elderly Veterans population with serious illness;
Assists with the development and expansion of the geriatrics, gerontological, and palliative care health services research program at the medical center;
Assists in the development of research protocols and grant proposals of GRECC researchers;
Organizes, secures funding for, and administers grants that support his/his own research that address major issues in geriatric health care practice and delivery;
Mentors junior faculty, fellows, and other associated health trainees in the development and implementation of research protocols;
Disseminates valuable research findings relevant to Veterans health and health care by publication of scholarly articles in referred journals and by written and in person presentations to appropriate VA and non-VA managers, clinicians, and/or scientific audiences;
Facilitates and promotes cooperative multidisciplinary research and fosters teamwork within the GRECC and medical center;
Participates in national planning meetings to develop multi-site research programs in aging, long-term care, and gerontological health services research; and,
Performs all other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday - Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm

NOTE: This is a TERM appointment (not-to-exceed 4 years). Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration (more than 1 year but not more than 4). Term employees are eligible to earn leave and generally have the same benefits as permanent employees including health and life insurance, within-grade increases and Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan coverage. Term appointments may be extended without further competition (up to the 4 year maximum). The appointment to a Term position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment.
Qualifications
This position includes a Selective Placement Factor (skill, knowledge, ability or other worker characteristic basic to - and essential for - satisfactory performance of the job). To qualify for this position, you must meet the following Basic Education Requirement for the 0601 series:
Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree, with a major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the Research Health Science Specialist - Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC). This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. ~AND~
In addition to the Selective Place Factor and Basic Education Requirement above, to qualify for this position at the GS-13 level, you must meet the following:
Experience: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-12) in the Federal service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Research Health Science Specialist - Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center (GRECC), and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is possessing expert working knowledge related to the areas of geriatric/gerontology health services research; applying the principles, practices, and research methodologies applicable to geriatric/gerontology research; developing and implementing protocols for studies with vulnerable populations such as those with serious health issues; and developing publications and presentations of study findings. (This geriatric/gerontology health research experience must be well documented in your resume.) NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week.

Physical Requirements: The work of this position is primarily sedentary. The work may involve long periods of standing and carrying of light items.
The work is performed in an office, conference room, or similar settings and occasionally within the medical center.
