The incumbent will be assigned to Radiology services at Lt. Col. Luke Weathers Jr. VA Medical Center, Memphis, TN and performing duties as a Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (MRI).
Duties
The incumbent will perform specialized and very difficult Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) procedures in the Radiology Department of the head, neck spine, chest and body. Incumbent may be required to work different modalities including CT, Interventional, and general x-ray depending on experience and certification. Incumbent is expected to have skill set in starting a peripheral intravenous line.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Coordinates with appropriate radiologist to determine the most ideal parameters to pulse the magnet for each individual patient's examination.
Positions patients within the scanner, selects and sets technical factors by accessing computer and responding with inputs that will result in the parameters of pulse form, sequence, slice profiles, etc.
Monitors the examination by checking computations, performances and results of the selected parameters to obtain the best diagnostic computer-generated data and images.
Performs clinical analysis of data recorded by the computer.
Monitors patient during all phases of the examination and removes patient from the influence of the magnetic field upon completion of the examination.
Performs technical operation and general technical maintenance of the computer, disk drives, console and imaging devices.
Assists manufacturer's representative and biomedical engineers in the calibration and troubleshooting of malfunctions in all equipment associated with the MRI unit.
Follows quality control program guidelines and updates.
Documents appropriately in the patient's record and in PACS.
Maintain inventory of lab, medical and computer supplies and initiate procedures to replenish stock and to receive stock.
Performs or monitors safety checks on patients, employees, and visitors to comply with the FDA safety standards regarding ferrous objects and cardiac pacemakers prior to those persons entering the environment of the magnetic field.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable]. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently] and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. [In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist.]
Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).]
Credentialing Standards. Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel.
English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations:
Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist, GS-9
(a) Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-8), directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level.
(b) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
*Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures.
Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers.
*Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure.
Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography.
Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions.
Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients.
Preferred Experience: Candidates with certifications in multi-modalities. At least three (3) years experience with experience with liver MRI.
