This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Duties
The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT)-Computed Tomography (CT) performs computerized tomography of the head, neck spine, chest and body. These exams are performed without and with the use of contrast materials. The purpose of these exams is to achieve diagnostic studies to bring about proper diagnosis and treatment. Incumbent will be required to work variable shifts. On-call may be required. Incumbent may be required to work
different modalities.
Assigned Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Performs specialized and very difficult computerized tomographic (CT) procedures in the Radiology Department. These procedures are performed on patients with severe injuries from accidents, patients who will not cooperate due to their mental status, paraplegic and quadriplegic patients who are almost helpless and patients with deformities which make it impossible to use routine techniques and positioning.
Confers with radiologist to establish requirement of non-standard examinations and determines technical factors, positioning, image sequence, and number and thickness cut of scans to satisfy the requirements. Evaluates the nature of critical and emergency procedures and rearranges patient priorities to accommodate them.
Receives patients and explains the method of the procedure; positions patients within the scanner, selects and sets technical factors by accessing computer and responding with inputs that will result in the parameters of technical factors, image sequence, slice profiles, etc. Sets up and adjusts accessory equipment required.
Maintains required supplies in the work area in a neat and orderly manner. Assures that sterile supplies, contrast material, catheters and other required supplies are adequate and in date. Assures necessary sterile supplies, contrast media, catheters and other required equipment is present and la id out for procedures. Prepares IV solutions, local anesthetics or antispasmodic drugs, such as xylocaine, valium, epinephrine, etc., for administration.
Monitors the examination by checking computations, performance and results of the selected parameters to obtain the best diagnostic computer generated data and images.
Monitors patient during all phases of the examination and removes patient from the scan room upon completion of the examination.
Performs technical operation and general technical maintenance of the computer, disk drives, console and imaging devices.
Assists manufacturer's representative and biomedical engineers in the calibration and trouble shooting of malfunctions in all equipment associated with the CT scanner.
Coordinate daily schedule and consult with other hospital personnel, physicians, clinical and administrative personnel pertaining to next day and future days availability for patient examinations.
Assist in preparation of procedure manuals and assist in devising or modifying procedures as necessary.
Work Schedule: Variable shifts including weekends: 7:30am - 4:00pm,
8:00am - 4:30PM, 4:00pm - 12:00am, 12:00am - 8:00am

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT). Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently] and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. [In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist].
Must have advanced ARRT Computed Tomography (CT) certification.
Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).
Credentialing Standards: Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation and is accredited by an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and be certified as radiographers in their field.
Grandfathering Provision: May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Physical Requirements: A physical examination will be conducted based on the physical requirements of the position. See VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for appointment, the following criteria must be met for the GS-9 level.
Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (GS-09)
Experience: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level.
Assignments: For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. DRTs at this grade level may be appointed to the following assignments:
Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist: Employees at this level are fully functional as an advanced DRT and carry out their assigned tasks independently. DRTs at this level may have varying assignments including special and complex imaging procedures beyond the full performance level, clinical instruction, and basic QM type duties within the program. Regardless of the nature of the specific assignment, the work must be of sufficient scope and complexity to meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform at this level. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
*Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures.
Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers.
*Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure.
Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography.
Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions.
Preferred Experience: Prefer multi-modality certification. Prefer experience with 3D post processing. Prefer at least 3 years of experience.
