The VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System is recruiting for a Maintenance Mechanic (Machine Shop). The Maintenance Mechanic (Machine Shop) is located within our Engineering Service.
Duties
The Maintenance Mechanic (Machine Shop) duties include:
Repairing and maintaining dietetics equipment to include but not limited to: food conveyors, tray conveyors, ovens, dishwashers, food warming equipment.
Repairing and maintaining patient moving equipment, gurneys, wheelchairs, scales, hoyer lifts, manual beds, and electric beds.
Assembling and/or repairing overhead trolley systems, automatic door openers, (hydraulic), conveyor systems, and medical research equipment.
Using lathes, drill presses, saws, metal cutting equipment, breakers, shears, planners, presses and other repair equipment.
Using basic shop mathematics, including algebra as required to accurately order materials, assemble components, and establish dimensions.
Performing work of a journey machinist capable of working within close tolerance, turning, shaping, milling, grinding, various steels, aluminum, copper, brass, bronze, various other metals.
Interpreting both written and oral instructions.
Reading and interpreting technical manuals, blue prints, shop drawings, and other highly complexed technical guides.
Design layout and fabrication of brackets, and other load bearing devices used to support mechanical equipment, medical devices, and electrical equipment.
Wearing appropriate safety gear during exposure of toxic fumes, high-pressure air and fluids.
Operating material handling equipment to include but not limited to prime movers and platform trucks.
Performing work of a journeyman sheet metal mechanic capable of design, layout, fabrication and modification of existing and or new duct work systems, fume hoods and or special equipment.
Utilizing ingenuity and good judgment in developing proper cost and cost effective solutions to non-routine installation and repair problems.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Incumbents will stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions, frequently handle, lift, carry, and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds, occasionally may lift and carry items over 50 pounds. Incumbents will engage in periods of continuous exertion while bending and shaping complex items and constructing larger, bulkier systems. The work is done inside and outside, and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy, sometimes required to make installations and repairs in areas where bad smelling fumes are present. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of uncomfortable heat conditions. Frequently exposed to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns, and infections and are occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones. Some workers may be exposed to toxic fumes and high-pressure air and fluids. Workers may be required to wear appropriate safety gear such as protective eyewear.
