You will serve as a PIPEFITTER HELPER in the PIPE SHOP, PRODUCTION RESOURCES DEPARTMENT of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will assist in pipe bending operations, as directed by the mechanic. You will draw material required and note etching on material to ensure that it is the right size and composition of metal. You will assist the mechanic in installing and modifying hangers, brackets, and other supporting fixtures. You will pickle and clean various items in cleaning solutions to remove sediment, paint, and other foreign matter.

• You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
• This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
• This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSTION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION: *Assists mechanic in the removal and repair of all piping systems and equipment, by loosening screws, bolts, etc. *Performs cutting and grinding operations onboard ship and in shop using various pneumatic or electric power tools and machines. *Ability to operate power saws, bending machines, portable and preparation machines, and test equipment. *Must be familiar with ship's piping systems, cleanliness requirements, radiological, and safety requirements. *Ability to use hand tools, such as hacksaws, wrenches, pipe cutters, acetylene and propane torches, expanders, sizing rings, and other tools of the trade.
