The Laborer completes the MN State Approved Nursing Assistant curriculum through the IVAN (Investing in VA Nursing) Program. They serve as an assistant and are responsible for supporting the daily needs of Veterans in the VA Medical Center. These positions have high visibility throughout the institution and require excellent customer service skills. The employee assists in all aspects of support for patient care including the movement of patients, equipment, supplies and staff assistance.

Duties

This is an Open Continuous Announcement. Cut-off for applications will occur every 2 weeks beginning December 14, 2023 and qualified applicants will be referred every two weeks until the positions are filled. This announcement may be extended if necessary. This program is intended to create a pathway for individuals to gain skills and qualifications to fill Nursing Assistant vacancies at the Minneapolis VA. The incumbent will be on-boarded into a "Laborer" role while they actively participate in MN State approved Nursing Assistant Training curriculum. After completion of the Nursing Assistant training, incumbents are eligible to apply for vacant Nursing Assistant positions in the facility or can remain in the Laborer role. NOTE: These are TEMPORARY appointments (Not to exceed 6-months). This appointment may be renewed for additional service in accordance with Agency needs to 1 additional year. IVAN hiring and curriculum will be completed on a quarterly basis. NOTE: These are part-time positions (20hrs/week). Benefits and time-off accrual will be prorated and based on your part-time work schedule. Major Duties include, but are not limited to: Responsible for the safe and efficient movement of Veterans, either alone or with an nursing staff member as needed Receives requests and complies with excellent customer service and phone etiquette Responds to requests to procure supplies, equipment, etc. from and for various areas of the facility, as requested by supervisor Assists with lifting & moving patients between rooms or wards using Safe Patient Handling equipment Maintains competencies and is able to assist with management of disruptive behavior in all areas of the facility Provides and transports equipment as available Disinfects / wipes down equipment with approved cleaning product prior to and after each patient transport Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification (will train upon hire) Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, Hours Vary, 20 hours per week as needed for program completion. Questions about physical demands or environmental factors may be addressed at the time of evaluation or examination. Working Conditions: Work will be performed on the grounds of the Minneapolis VA Health System, primarily within the facility. Main duties include lifting and positioning patients, assisting with disruptive behavior patients in a clinical setting, transporting and moving patients, and cleaning reusable medical equipment. Pushing and pulling hospital equipment, walking distances, taking stairs, and answering cell phone will be daily occurrences. Retrieving equipment from around the hospital and grounds, and delivering equipment to various areas is expected. Assisting clinical staff with obtaining equipment and other patient support items will be needed. Work is in a Medical Center setting and involves possible exposure to contagious disease which will require appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as identified. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
