You will serve as a Lead Historian within TRAINING AND EDUCATION COMMAND.

Duties

You will research and write historical products as directed by Division leadership. The incumbent is assigned to plan, organize, and write all or substantial portions of official accounts involving major topics of Marine Corps history. You will respond to editorial guidance from supervisory chain, ensuring the project is factually accurate, free from error, and adheres to History Division guidelines for formatting and tone as appropriate for a Service History Office. You will serve as the non-supervisory team lead for historians within Histories Branch. You will serve as a professional mentor, organizing and leading working groups that perform peer-review of colleagues' work. You will provide editorial comments on historical content (i.e., writing clarity, utilization of sources, etc.) and assist historians to understand and adhere to the History Division writing style. You will serve as the primary assistant to the Supervisory Historian, Histories Branch in regards to project management and Branch operations. You will undertake special assignments as directed by History Division leadership. You will direct staff rides or tours at battlefields (national or international); serving as project manager for manuscripts produced by authors external to the Division You will provide graduate level instruction at various schools within Marine Corps University You will present papers on topics relevant to Marine Corps history at professional conferences or symposia; and conduct oral history interviews as part of the Marine Corps Oral History Program.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Publication of book-length monographs, chapters or essays in book-length edited volumes, or articles in scholarly, peer-reviewed journals. 2) Research in federal repositories and/or working with official records from the Department of Defense and/or the U.S. Armed Services. 3)The ability to edit historical writing for content, comprehension, style, and accuracy. Basic Requirement for Historian:
Degree
: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in history; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
