You will serve as a HISTORIAN in the HISTORY DIVISION of TRAINING AND EDUCATION COMMAND.

Duties

You will execute the Marine Corps History Division Oral History Program, to include scheduling interviews with current and retired senior leaders, preparing interview questions, conducting interviews, and maintaining interview files. You will develop and maintain working relationships with principals and staff, as well as staying up to date with current Marine Corps operations, initiatives, and developments. You will advise and assist History Division historians and field historians in planning and executing interviews and coordinate with Archives Branch in the transfer of interviews to the Marine Corps Oral History Collection. You will research/write historical studies as directed with an emphasis on those utilizing History Division’s oral history holdings, present papers and participate in discussions at professional conferences.

  • You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

GS-11: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: conducting and maintaining oral history interviews as part of a Marine Corps' oral history program; circulating among active-duty, former, and retired Marines to arrange and conduct oral history interviews with Marines of all grades, including general officers; publishing books, book chapters, or articles using original historical documents and/or oral history interviews as source material; and assisting in archiving and cataloging oral histories for research and reference. GS-09: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: applying current techniques in oral history interviews, processing procedures, and historical writing; using digital recording and transcribing equipment and computerized systems to save and maintain sound recordings; and researching, writing, and editing historical manuscripts using original historical documents and/or oral history interviews as source material. Education

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess.
  1. Degree: history; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history.
OR
  1. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Applicants may also qualify based on education OR a combination of education and experience, in lieu of the one year specialized experience indicated in the Qualifications Section.

3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree

GS-09 GRADE LEVEL

2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree
