About the Position: You will function as a Derrickboat Engineer, you will be responsible for operating, maintaining, and making repairs to a vast array of machinery and equipment located in Louisville, KY.
Duties
Operate, maintain, and make repairs to various machines and equipment on a floating and mobile land plant
Ensure safe and reliable mechanical and electrical operation of the floating plant during all lifting operations
Ensure the crane is inspected and prepared before the lifting operations begin
Assist Master and Operators in selection, inspection, and assembly of rigging for lifts
Troubleshoot problem areas to determine the type and extent of repairs required and make adjustments and emergency repairs on own initiative and report major repairs and breakdowns immediately to supervisor
Start, regulate and stop diesel engines, read gages and meters, make necessary adjustments, record readings, maintain machinery and equipment by lubricating and replacing parts, and check water and oil levels in engines and machines
Monitor and check machinery for sound working condition, perform preventive maintenance, maintain cleanliness, and test for proper operation, capacity, and the detection of need for repair, or lubrication in accordance with established specifications
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- The incumbent must possess a valid state driver's license to operate a motor vehicle in accomplishment of assigned duties.
- The incumbent shall maintain annual rigging and applicable operator certifications.
- This position is covered by the civilian drug abuse testing program. Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R, Condition of Employment for certain civilian positions identified as critical under the Drug Abuse Testing Program.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Derrickboat Engineer without more than normal supervision. Perform major and preventive maintenance on marine vessels and equipment, particularly, in the mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, electronic, refrigeration, ventilation, pneumatic and waste disposal systems. Performing major overhauls of diesel engines, generators, and drive systems of motor vessels. Mentoring employees in floating plant maintenance operations and have directly or indirectly led small work teams in the completion of operations and maintenance tasks. Using welding and cutting equipment and procedures as well as a wide variety of standard electric and pneumatic power tools.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The incumbent stands, stoops, bends, kneels, climbs steps and ladders, and frequently performs lifting of up to 50 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS: The position is subject to dangers inherent to floating plant operations such as, but not limited to, drowning, capsizing, falling, and being struck by loads. The majority of work is performed in confined areas subject to exhaust, flames, fuel oil, and cramped positions. Due to extremely high noise levels, the incumbent wears hearing protection. The incumbent works around moving machinery where there is a danger of sustaining cuts and bruises. The incumbent works in confined and cramped conditions and spaces and is subject to dangers associated with welding, flame cutting and general structural/mechanical maintenance and repairs. The incumbent works indoors and outdoors, subject to all types of weather.
RESPONSIBILITY: The incumbent works under the supervision of Towboat Master or other higher graded employees who issues oral and written instructions pertaining to objectives and work to be accomplished. Receives instruction in connection with special or infrequent assignments. Performs daily and repetitive tasks on own initiative. Exercises own technical knowledge, judgment and skill to accomplish assignments and/or objectives. Work is evaluated from observations as to the proficiency and dispatch with which equipment is maintained in good operating condition and is subject to technical review by engineers for propriety during inspection tours.
