About the Position: Serves as a Diesel Electric Engineer assigned to the Louisville Repair Station in Louisville, KY. This position is under the command of the Regional Rivers Repair Fleet in the Huntington District.
Duties
Inspect all engine room and auxiliary machinery, equipment, and systems to determine the condition, maintenance needs, and required operating repairs.
Make cost estimates, material estimates, and man hours required to accomplish repairs.
Prepare machinery and equipment for preservation during lay-up.
Conduct inspections of all completed repairs.
Inspect and diagnoses floating plant mechanical and control system problems and determines the repairs necessary.
Maintain Main Sea chest, Fire Pump, Bilge Pump, and all associated piping.
Rigging loads for load handling equipment and training employees in proper signalperson techniques and crane safety.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- One-year probationary period may be required.
- Must possess and maintain a valid state issued driver's license.
- Pre-employment and annual physical is required.
- Pre-employment and annual drug testing is required.
- Employee may be required to alternate working hours on all shifts.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Diesel Electric Engineer without more than normal supervision. Experience as Diesel Electric Engineer aboard a Service Barge which is being towed from location to location to furnish shop, power, and operational facilities for a variety of maintenance and repair projects, including major mechanical, structural and control rehabilitation which may require partial or complete lock chamber de-watering. A little experience and qualifications performing major and preventive maintenance on marine vessels and equipment, to include mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, electronic, refrigeration, ventilation, pneumatic and waste disposal systems. Experience performing major overhauls of diesel engines, generators, and drive systems of motor vessels. Experience working with structural repair crews at lock and dam facilities performing both major and minor repairs. Experience mentoring employees in floating plant maintenance operations and have directly or indirectly led small work teams in the completion of operations and maintenance tasks.- Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Incumbent performs work from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms and where the parts, equipment, or systems are in hard to reach places. Work requires the incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, crawl, climb, and work in a tiring and uncomfortable position. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside and outside subjecting employee to varying climatic conditions, abnormal noises, temperature, danger of burns, irritation from grease and oils, bruises, strains, danger from attending moving machinery, falling overboard, electrical shock, falls on slippery decks or steep stairways, possible drowning, and crankcase explosion. Life jackets are worn at all times while on deck.
