The Chalmers P. Wylie VA Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio is recruiting for a full time Advanced Medical Support Assistant within the Surgical Service.
Duties
The AMSA has full knowledge of receipt, intake, and indexing of health and administrative information. Duties included to support and assist coordinated care delivery include, but not limited to:
Works collaboratively in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery environment (i.e., patient aligned care team, or other specialty care).
Setting priorities and deadlines, adjusting the flow and sequencing of the work to meet team and patient needs.
May work with the team to reinforce the plan of care and self-help solutions and entering appropriate information into the electronic record.
Monitoring pre-appointment requirements to assure readiness for patient visit/procedure (e.g., X-ray, lab work).
Ensure that the clinic setup is closely monitored to effectively support the needs of the clinic and make any necessary adjustments.
Develop/maintain effective and efficient communication with the patient, interdisciplinary team, management team, VA medical centers, and other agencies.
Collects, scans, and updates health insurance information, promotes Veteran registration and utilization of MyHealthyVet (MHV).
Participating and providing input in problem solving on operational issues or procedures in team meetings.
Participating in and independently following up on team huddles by sharing information and collaborating with the medical team to assure continuity of care.
Trains other MSAs on correct clinic operations and serves as a preceptor to developmental level MSAs.
Schedules appointments; notifies his/her supervisor when clinic area access is less than desirable or if an individual patient cannot be scheduled within mandated timeframes.
Daily review of active/pending Message Center communications for accuracy and disposition.
Reports backlogs, difficulties in meeting deadlines, uncooperative physicians and/or healthcare staff, or difficulty in securing information from clinicians or Employee plans
Organizes work independently and handles scheduling problems and deviations based on personal knowledge of clinic operations and policy, schedules, and provider's preferences.
Coordinates with the patient care team to review the clinic utilization by using various reports, i.e. Clinic Utilization Statistical Summary, Access Reports, Referrals, and Work Queue.
Communicates/correspond in Message Center/Message Pools addressing nurse and provider requests to schedule and reschedule Veteran appointments with immediate needs. The AMSA works in the Surgery Service area clinics, as assigned under the direction of the MSA Supervisor or Lead AMSA and reports to the Supervisor MSA. The AMSA follows the Columbus Ohio VAACC policies and protocols.4. The AMSA performs, reports, and records assigned support duties, including but not limited to:
EHRM message pools
Knowledge of computerized data entry and information processing systems
Team Huddles & Team Meetings to manage and plan patient care
Setting priorities, deadlines, and adjusting the flow and sequencing of the work to meet team and patient needs
Gatekeeper for requested specialty clinical appointments, and clinical procedures
Communicates with clinical nurses/providers on adapting to constant changes in the clinics for proper patient care
Provides wait times, updated status', and routine concerns and procedures to clinical and supervisory staff
Communicates information from Supervisors to peer co-workers on daily assignment deadlines
The AMSA works in collaboration with the Registered Nurse (RN), and/or Health Care Provider (HCP) and adheres to all current directives of the VA and meet current Joint Commission standards, and VA-OIG expectations.
The AMSA attends all meetings, trainings, in-services, and educations required to maintain proficiency as an AMSA.
Work schedule: Monday-Friday, Full Time, 8:00 a.m - 4:30 p.m.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section A, paragraph 3.j.
Experience: Six months experience of clerical, office, customer service, or other administrative work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position; OR
Education: One year above high school; OR
Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
Grade Determinations: Below are the requirements to be found eligible for the GS-06 grade level.
One year of experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level and the ability to collaborate and communicate with a wide range of medical clinicians across multiple disciplines (e.g. medical doctors, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, clinical pharmacists, and nursing staff) to accomplish team goal setting to ensure medical care to patients is met. To be eligible for the GS-6, applicants must meet one year of experience equivalent to the GS-5 grade level and demonstrate the below KSA's:
Ability to operate computerized programs and systems in order to enter, modify, and retrieve sensitive medical and patient identifying information PII into or from electronic health records, scheduling systems, and/or reports.
Advanced knowledge of medical terminology specific to understand medical diagnosis and procedures sufficient to communicate clinical staff instructions to patients.
Ability to schedule medical appointments in a clinical setting.
Ability to work independently in the accomplishment of a wide variety of duties [performing patient support work.
Ability to communicate effectively and professionally [in person, electronically, and/or by telephone], with internal and external customers.
Skill in customer service with the ability to identify customer concerns, and refer to the appropriate staff, as necessary, to ensure a satisfactory resolution.
