About the Position:
This is a full-time civilian faculty position at the USAWC under Title 10 USC 4021. Initial appointment may be up to three years, the first of which may be a trial period. Appointment may be renewed in one- to five-year increments thereafter. Academic rank and salary will be based on academic credentials, experience, and professional accomplishments; the focus and salary are at the Assistant/Associate Professor level. Full Professor appointments may be available by exception.
Duties
Teach and facilitate seminar dialogue for the USAWC core course in Defense Management. The Defense Management course introduces Department of Defense systems and processes required to generate and prepare military force for the nation.
Teach and facilitate seminar dialogue for the USAWC core course in Strategic Leadership (SL). The SL course reviews individual and organizational factors that have shown to generate and maintain competitive advantage in large organizations.
Participate in and contribute to faculty development programs that prepare all DCLM faculty to facilitate instruction in the Defense Management and Strategic Leadership Defense Management courses.
Design and teach elective courses related to the application of Defense Management systems and processes to resource Department of Defense missions.
Contribute to specialized instruction in either strategic leadership or defense management concentration programs. These specialized programs provide more tailored educational experiences for USAWC students.
Engage in research and publishable scholarship that advances knowledge in fields relevant to the Army War College curriculum and/or to leadership development in the U.S. Department of Defense.
Provide developmentally focused counsel to mid-career professionals to take most advantage of the academic year.
Engage in external service in support of the U.S. Army or the U.S. Department of Defense, including consulting, leader development, systems improvement, and applied research.
Operate as a contributing member of a faculty teaching team to integrate required and elective courses across the academic program.
Contribute to a professional, collegial, and inclusive departmental (DCLM) climate that prioritizes student development.
Contribute to the Department of Command, Leadership, and Management and the Army War College missions by fulfilling other faculty duties as required.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a TOP SECRET security clearance.
- Must comply with the Drug Testing Program requirements (pre-employment testing and random testing after being appointed).
- Ideally need to be available for employment by 1 July 2024.

Define KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSAs):
1. Relevant theoretical and practical experience in the science and practice of Defense Enterprise systems and processes, ideally at the senior/strategic level. OSD/Joint experience is desired but not required. Experience in the development of others in subjects related to defense management.
2. An established record of superlative teaching at the graduate, and/or executive or Senior Service College level. This should include the ability to conceptualize, design, and write lesson plans to support instruction, as well as preparedness for developing successful, mature, professional students.
3. Evidence of potential for research and publication in areas relevant to the USAWC curriculum, to include U.S. Department of Defense force management and development systems and processes.
4. Refined oral and written communication skills to both present and provide feedback to others, including the ability to serve as a student advisor for graduate-level research projects.
5. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively on a teaching team or with professional colleagues oriented on similar goals.
6. Possess an advanced degree in a relevant field.
