This position is located in Medical Imaging Service, Boise VA Medical Center, Boise ID. This position covers both CT (50%) by performing CT and Radiology Imaging.

Duties

DUTIES: -Performs CT and radiographic exams in the Medical Imagining Department and at other locations such as the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and Surgery as required. Radiographic exams outside of the Medical Imagining Department are performed at the bedside and in operating rooms on patients that are unable to be x-rayed in the Medical Imaging Service due to incapacity or surgical procedures in order to provide diagnostic images to surgeons and professional staff. Exams performed in Surgery such as hip pinnings, retrograde cystograms, and angiograms as well as ICU exams such as pacemakers placement are more complex. Two portable x-rays Units, two mobile intensifier unit (C-Arm), and a digital fluoroscopy unit in the cysto-room that is located in Surgery are used to achieve surgery exams while ICU exams utilize the two portable x-ray units and the surgery C-Arms. -Calculates radiographic exposure techniques and technical factors to control density, contrast and distortion of CT and digital images to produce quality diagnostic radiologic examinations. This process includes utilization of computerized radiology equipment, the CT Scanner, direct radiology equipment, buckys, collimators, filters, grids, and other accessories to produce digital images of hig diagnostic quality with minimum of retakes. Evaluates resulting images for quality and makes necessary corrections required to retake sub-quality and makes necessary corrections required to retake sub-quality images. Notifies radiologists of exams requiring their immediate attention. - Positions normal, abnormal, or difficult patients for a number of general to complex radiographic examinations. -Receives and interprets all radiology requests. Inputs pertinent radiology information into computer and reviews existing information via the computer radiology information system (RIS) and VistA.-Must be able to use commercial PACS to correctly send patient information and images to an outside teleradiology contractor. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable]. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently] and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).] Credentialing Standards. Public Law 97-35, the Consumer-Patient Radiation Health and Safety Act of 1981, requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75, Standards for the Accreditation of Educational Programs and the Credentialing of Radiographic Personnel. Essentially, they must have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation and is accredited by an organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and be certified as radiographers in their field. Grade Determinations: Diagnostic Radiologic Technician,GS-9 Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: (a) Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures. (b) Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers. (c) Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure. (d) Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography. (e) Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions. (f) Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients. Preferred Experience: This position will need to be filled with an ARRT certified DRT, preferable with 3 years or more experience, surgery and specials experience needed.
