You will serve as a PRODUCTION SHOP ASSISTANT in the MECHANICAL SHOP (CODE 931/938), PRODUCTION RESOURCES DEPARTMENT of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will provide staff support to the Mechanical Shop Superintendent by serving as the Shop's Process and Specialty Work (OPW) Manager. You will participate in the development of Shop goals, priorities and objectives. You will establish improvements for all non-nuclear shop processes by studying current methods and making recommendations. You will manage tooling, material and facility requirements. You will assist in reviewing employee suggestions, tooling and facility improvements. You will stay current with technological advancements. You will perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a secret security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

GS-12: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience inspecting ship work to ensure work is planned and performed safely, efficiently and in accordance with prescribed procedures. Experience monitoring project cost performance and conducting quality assurance trend analysis of all non-nuclear shop processes to reduce cost and radiation exposure. Experience investigating shop practices by identifying deficiencies and taking appropriate action. Experience developing plans, policies and procedures related to nuclear submarine overhaul and repair. GS-11: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience assisting with inspecting ship work to ensure work is planned and performed safely, efficiently and in accordance with prescribed procedures. Experience monitoring project cost performance and conducting quality assurance trend analysis of all non-nuclear shop processes to reduce cost and radiation exposure. Experience investigating shop practices by identifying deficiencies and taking appropriate action. Experience assisting with developing plans, policies and procedures related to nuclear submarine overhaul and repair. Education

In lieu of specialized experience, you may qualify with the following education or combination of both education and experience:

GS-11

Successful completion of Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree

or

Successful completion of 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree

or
