The purpose of this position is to maintain, troubleshoot, overhaul, repair, and modify heavy duty vehicles and mobile equipment which have utility systems or special hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, electrical, or electronic systems, features, or controls designed for construction, combat, earth moving, firefighting, and comparable industrial or special applications.
Duties
- Troubleshoots hard-to-locate problems, and identifies defects and causes of mechanical problems to determine type and extent of necessary repairs to a variety of heavy mobile vehicles and equipment.
- Repairs, overhauls, and rebuilds a variety of heavy mobile equipment/vehicles such as bulldozers, road graders, power shovels, mobile cranes, heavy combat equipment, and missile transporters, including their major systems, i.e., diesel, multi-fuel, and gasoline engines (including supercharged and turbocharged), automatic/manual transmissions, multi-gear assemblies, and a variety of positioning systems.
- Conducts functional and performance tests using a wide variety of test procedures and equipment on completed work assignments.
- Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment.

- Work may occasionally require travel away from the normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft. May be required to participate in contingency situations, both real world and exercises.
- May be required to work other than normal duty hours such as rotating shifts, overtime, weekends, on-call, holidays, etc. Emergency overtime may be required.
- This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing.

- Incumbent must possess or have the capability to acquire an appropriate Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and any required endorsements within 12 months of assignment. This requirement is a condition of employment.
- Employee is required to utilize security and safety practices and procedures at all times. Must wear protective safety equipment and clothing when appropriate.
- Position requires the ability to discern colors, contrast, and depth.
- May require certification for servicing and maintaining automotive air conditioning systems.
- Must receive training on the handling and disposition of hazardous waste.
- As required, trains and/or guides lower grade personnel.
- This position requires a physical/medical examination. The physical requirements of this position are: Works in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. Requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching.
- Works on top of, under, and in tight compartments performing strenuous work while in cramped or awkward positions.
- Frequently lifts and carries items unassisted weighing up to 40 pounds and often exerts similar effort in pushing, pulling, and positioning parts, assemblies, and equipment.
- Frequently lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of other workers or with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes. May work from ladders or work platforms at varying heights.
- This position is designated as a Key Position IAW AFI 36-507. Duties of this position are essential to the accomplishment of wartime/contingency operations.
- Incumbents of key positions must be removed from their military recall status if alternative for filling of the position during an emergency are not available.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5800 - Transportation/Mobile Equipment Maintenance Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
The screen out element for this position is the Ability To Do the Work of a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic without More than Normal Supervision.
JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
Knowledge of heavy mobile equipment assembly, installation, and repair, i.e., bulldozers, road graders, power shovels, mobile cranes, heavy combat equipment, and missile transporters; and technical practices in order to repair/overhaul major systems, i.e., diesel, multi-fuel, and gasoline engines, automatic and manual transmissions, multi-gear assemblies, and a variety of positioning systems.
Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
Skill in using measuring instruments and test equipment such as engine analyzers, dynamometers, exhaust analyzers, vacuum and fuel pump testers, injector testers, ignition timers, tachometers, ammeters, and ohmmeters.
Skill in troubleshooting mechanical problems, analyzing malfunctions, and determining the extent of repairs necessary.
Ability to interpret instructions, technical manuals, illustrations, specifications, diagrams, schematics, and similar guides to make repairs and modifications.
Ability to maintain, troubleshoot, overhaul, repair, and modify a variety of heavy mobile vehicles and equipment without more than normal supervision; and use and maintain hand and/or power tools and equipment required to do the work of heavy mobile equipment mechanic.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Works in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. The work requires frequent standing, bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Works on top of, under, and in tight compartments performing strenuous work while in cramped or awkward positions.
Frequently lifts and carries items unassisted weighing up to 40 pounds and often exerts similar effort in pushing, pulling, and positioning parts, assemblies, and equipment. WORKING CONDITIONS: Works both inside and outside. When inside, is frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and noise that is difficult to talk above. When outside, is exposed to inclement weather conditions. Worker is exposed to irritations and discomfort from dust, heat, and fumes. Worker is subject to cuts, burns, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock, and injuries from falls. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as ear devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves, respirators, and protective clothing. Some of these safety items may be uncomfortable to wear or use and must be worn for long periods of time.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
