Performs a variety of specimen testing and processing functions, coordinating general flow of specimens from phlebotomy to the individual sections (i.e. Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology etc). Work involves tests and examinations using techniques of medical laboratory practice in one or more specialized areas. Knowledge of the chemistry, biology and anatomy involved. Performs work requiring a practical knowledge of the methods and techniques of one or more of biological or physical sciences.

Duties

Major Duties include (but not limited to): Cleaning centrifuges and other equipment as daily maintenance. Preparing medical specimens for shipping out for diagnostic testing, including hazardous and infectious agents. Following proper storage requirements and procedures for laboratory specimens. Processing emergency specimens and routine specimens in a timely manner. Adhering to all universal precautions, infection control, and safety regulations associated with the laboratory. Selecting and using the appropriate equipment and materials for laboratory tests. Preparing samples for testing to include labeling, centrifugation, decanting, aliquoting, etc. Collect and handle specimens in accordance with the Federal Workplace Drug Testing Program as administered and regulated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) for drug testing of new and/or current employees. Maintain the integrity of the collection process, ensuring the privacy of the donor, and ensuring the security of the specimen. Ensure and verify correct labeling and patient identification of every patient specimen collected. Work Schedule: To be determined upon selection. Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 11/24/2023. GS-06 Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. Proficiency in English requirement: Applicants must be proficient in the English language to be further considered. Medical Technician Series 0645 Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR): Applicants must satisfy IOR to be further considered for the position. Specialized Experience: (a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings. OR (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. You may qualify based on your experience as described below: GS-06 Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Utilizing centrifuges, automated processors, and laboratory refrigerators and freezer. Loading specimens onto laboratory instruments for analysis. Following proper storage requirements and procedures for laboratory specimens. Maintaining operational and quality control logs, records, and worksheets. Using a computer to enter or retrieve data from patient records. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion, such as walking, standing, bending and lifting, weights of 30-40 pounds reagent containers, etc. Work Environment: The work involves regular and recurring risks or discomforts which are associated with working in a clinical laboratory. Specimens can be infectious, reagents corrosive and volatile. The incumbent wears all necessary protective clothing such as coats, goggles, gloves, and takes special safety precautions such as adopting sterile techniques as necessary.
