EBSA is seeking an experienced writer/editor who can turn stiff/complicated language into smooth, plain prose. This expert communicator would be part of our plain writing initiative to ensure that our vital services are accessible to the public.
A writer/editor should be able to comfortably turn technical jargon into information that the reader can understand/use. Responsibilities consist not only of writing/editing, but also advising on plain language matters and assisting in outreach efforts.
Duties
Major duties for this position include but are not limited to, the following:
Writing
Develop briefing papers, talking points, and speeches for the Assistant Secretary and Deputy Assistant Secretaries.
Prepare responses to requests from congressional committees, the White House, and other administrative officials.
Collaborate with national leadership on op-eds, blog posts, and other storytelling narratives.
Editing
Review and line edit reports, publications, executive correspondence, presentations, website pages, and other written work.
Edit documents for a host of different audiences, including the public, participants and beneficiaries of health and retirement plans, employers who sponsor plans, service providers, the employee benefit industry, economists, lawyers, Congress, the White House, and more.
Plain language consulting
Support the agency's plain writing initiative and develop guides, templates, and checklists.
Serve as a plain writing and communications consultant and advisor to national leadership.
Provide plain language training to agency offices.
Outreach
Assist in expanding EBSA's reach by helping develop and execute online, print, and visual outreach and marketing campaigns.
Coordinate with outreach staff to generate digital media strategies, including for the EBSA website, social media, and others.
Identify opportunities to connect EBSA with limited English proficient individuals, minority populations, and other underserved communities.
Requirements
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Must be at least 16 years old.
- Requires a probationary period if the requirement has not been met.
- Candidate required to obtain the necessary security/investigation level.
Qualifications
Applicants must have 52 weeks of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, GS-13, in the Federal Service.
Specialized Experience is the experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform the duties of the position successfully, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level.
Specialized Experience for this position includes: experience serving as a plain language writing and communications consultant; and preparing or coordinating the production and presentation of program documents, proposals, reports, and memoranda on policy and program matters OR experience reviewing correspondence and ensuring clarity, consistency, completeness, and compliance with organizational policy.
Education
There is no substitution of education for experience at the GS-14 level for this position.
