National Defense University (NDU) supports the joint warfighter by providing rigorous Joint Professional Military Education to members of the U.S. Armed Forces and select others in order to develop leaders who have the ability to operate and creatively think in an unpredictable and complex world. This is a Title 10 Excepted Service Appointment. Appointment is not to exceed 3 years with the possibility for extension.

Duties

Serves as the primary advisor to the Associate Dean of Academic Programs and is responsible for general academic advising functions to all current students of the National Defense University, College of Information and Cyberspace by providing information and guidance on academic programs, courses and services to include all Certificate Programs, Advanced Management Program and or Master of Science Degree Program. Assists current students in the development of a Program of Study that will meet Certificate or Master of Science Degree requirements and regularly monitors student progress toward completion of a program. Works closely with NDU-CIC faculty and leadership as the point-of-contact for student administration and or logistics issues to include answering student inquiries on a wide range of issues ranging from registration procedures to transportation and lodging questions to student concerns: regularly monitoring student records transcripts for quality control issues. Provides graduation support to the NDU-CIC Office of Students. Works closely with the NDU-CIC Office of Student Services and the NDU International Student Management Office to facilitate the admission and enrollment of international fellows and students. Performs outreach to prospective students to include providing preliminary guidance and answering prospective enrollees regarding NDU-CIC programs, courses, and services; representing the NDU-CIC as part of the outreach team at select expos, conferences or industry fairs and coordinating associated events and functions. Monitors the academic progress of students to ensure program compliance; analyzes progress reports from NDU-CIC faculty and assist NDU-CIC leadership in determining eligibility and satisfactory progress toward program certificate or completion of degree. Identifies current and potential needs or problem areas and refers students to appropriate NDU-CIC faculty for assistance and follow-up by communicating findings to NDU-CIC leadership. Responds to all student inquiries in a timely and efficient manner and ensures students are informed through e-communications to include notices for upcoming courses. conferences. deadlines. and policy changes; schedule and present at student informational "Brown Bags" on topics related to advising and or academic program requirements. Shares and discusses course modifications and student feedback with NDU-CIC leadership to assure optimal teamwork and student learning. Uses persuasive skills, diplomacy, and knowledge of group dynamics to resolve technical or professional differences of opinion that arise. Aid with at-risk students and notify NDU-CIC leadership of their academic progress. Demonstrates organizational skills and initiative to manage multiple tasks and deadlines and to effectively respond to changing priorities. Possesses knowledge and technical expertise in curriculum and degree requirements for diplomas, certificates and degrees granted and admission functions to include enrollment services, practices, and techniques, as well as the design and development of marketing strategics and tools. Develops and maintains data and historical reference material necessary to reach an accurate and quality decision when meeting objectives and using resources. Prepares or oversees the preparation of statistical reports on student characteristics, demographics, course enrollments, grade distributions, transfer and validation of credit, additional electives, student attrition, and other student advising and or admissions-related subjects. Highlights trends and makes appropriate recommendations to NDU-CIC leadership and faculty. Primary point of contact to outside agencies, colleges, and centers on all student transcripts issues. Coordinates all activities associated with the admission program and acts as liaison with the military services, other DoD and federal agencies and the defense industry concerning assignment of student quotas and the acceptance and rejection of student nominees. Makes management level decisions concerning improvements in admissions and student advising processes. Performs long range planning of operations and establishes appropriate internal controls. Interprets and explains NDU-CIC policies and procedures as it pertains to student advising. Participates in preparation of orientations and presents academic information to incoming NDU-CIC students. Identifies options for student to satisfy specific certificate and or degree requirements. Supervises the collation, maintenance, safeguarding, release, and utilization of official records of students, former students, and graduates of NDU-CIC. Oversees the preparation and distribution of grade reports, final course rosters, transcripts and such other records and report as may be necessary. Processes student and course information while maintaining data integrity for use by components and university personnel.

  • The position is governed by 10 USC 1595 and NDUI 1416.0l dated March 2017.
  • Must be able and willing to travel both domestically and internationally. Travel is seldom required. Less than 20 % of the time.
  • The incumbent must be able to successfully obtain and maintain a Secret clearance.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must: REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Possesses a Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education (or international equivalent) in education or other appropriate discipline. Strong positive interpersonal skills including the ability to work collaboratively, build effective working relationships, work effectively with executive leadership and faculty; a team-oriented leader. Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and time management. Appropriate knowledge, training, or experience in curriculum development and design, faculty development, active learning, and research methodologies. Demonstrated ability to consult with faculty to design and deliver active, engaging classroom experiences face-to-face and online. This position may require the employee to occasionally travel from the normal duty station. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Demonstrated experience and understanding of Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) is preferred. Experience or familiarity with Department of Defense policies is preferred. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills, and can provide valuable training and experience that translates to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education Requirement: Possesses a Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education (or international equivalent) in education or other appropriate discipline.
