The New Mexico VA Healthcare System is recruiting for a Health Technician assigned to Nursing Service. The primary purpose of the position is to provide medical, and administrative support assistance to the Inpatient units. The Technician will perform numerous assignments to relieve the medical student/resident of routine duties that can be performed by ancillary staff, and will uphold the standards of care as outlined by the Medical Center and Nursing Service policies and procedures.

Duties

Duties included, but not limited to: Operates and maintains commonly used electrocardiographic (ECG) equipment including 12 lead ECG and accessories. Collect blood samples for laboratory testing daily/as ordered for the med-surg units and other inpatient units as needed to support Veteran Centered Care. Interacts with patients, visitors, staff, students, and volunteers in a courteous, helpful, cooperative, and compassionate manner. Performing technical and administrative tasks such as, ABls, bladder ultrasounds, Pulmonary Function Tests (PFTs), venipuncture and phlebotomy, wound care, ear irrigation, monofilament foot exam, Assisting Veterans with scheduling appointments, Recognizes an emergent change in the physical and emotional condition of patients and takes appropriate action. Retrieves data from files at the request of physicians to include films from radiology. Prepares patients for meals, feeds and assists those requiring help. Operates and maintains medical instruments and equipment for diagnostic and treatment procedures such as, ECG equipment including 12 lead ECG and accessories, Hoyer Lift, Davis Roller, Special Beds, vital signs monitors, etc. Applies comfort, protective and supportive devices such as scrotal supports, binders, slings, stockings, safety belts, side-rails, pillows, and restraints. Update patient demographic information as appropriate. Notifies health care professionals of tests results such as EKGs, pulmonary functions, CBG's, and vital signs; documents aforementioned test results in Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) Graphic User Interface (GUI). Upholds standards of care outlined by Medical Center and Service policies and procedures. Work Schedule: Full-time, Variable- may be discussed during the interview process Position Description Title/PD#: Health Technician/PD04037A and PD04037O Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary but also requires some standing, walking, bending, lifting and carrying of heavy items. The work requires above average agility and dexterity. The work may require heavy lifting of equipment or patients. Good vision and hearing are required to collect patient data. Must be able to utilize good body mechanics and have stamina to withstand stress.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. This position has an Individual Occupation Requirement (IOR). You must meet one of the following: Possess the technician experience that requires application of knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. (This position is part of the series that range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists.) OR Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. In addition to meeting the IOR above, you must meet one of the following: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: assisting with standard diagnostic tests or procedures (e.g. electrocardiogram, venipuncture, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, etc), collecting and labeling specimens; and maintaining patient records. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the occupation. OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education that equates to 100 hundred percent Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
