This position is assigned to the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Veterans Transportation Services (VTS), Ambulance Service, at the Raymond G. Murphy Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) in Albuquerque, NM.
Qualifications
IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION AT THE GS-9 LEVEL YOU MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING:
ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must possess one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-8 grade level in the Federal service, that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE INCLUDES: Performing physical examinations and obtaining patient history, assessing status of patient's neurological system, cardiovascular system, circulatory system, skeletal system, orthopedic system, motor and sensory skills, and level of consciousness; utilizing broad knowledge and skills sufficient to provide and gather information on the human body structure, function, illnesses and diseases, and the treatment procedure supporting patient charting; administering basic and advanced life support care at emergency scene in accordance with established medical standards, which may include providing advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), international trauma life support (ITLS), PALS, PEPP, advanced airway management, CPR, and/or drug treatments; performing invasive and non-invasive procedures on patients with life threatening and non-life-threatening conditions per established procedures or as authorized/directed by physicians; operating or utilizing various emergency vehicles and emergency/medical equipment, tools and supplies. SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: You must have successfully completed two (2) years of progressively higher-level graduate education or a master's degree in a field directly related to the work of this position. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. (COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS ARE REQUIRED AT TIME OF APPLICATION)

COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: You must possess combination of successfully completed graduate education and specialized experience directly related to the work of this position to meet total qualification requirements. PARAMEDIC CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
DRIVER'S LICENSE REQUIREMENT: Paramedics require a current and valid unrestricted state driver's license.
EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION: You must possess a current and valid National Registered Emergency Medical Technician (Paramedic) certification.
BASIC LIFE SUPPORT PROVIDER CERTIFICATION: You must possess a current and valid Basic Life Support Provider certification.
ADVANCED CARDIAC LIFE SUPPORT CERTIFICATION: You must possess a current and valid Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Physical Requirements: The Paramedics work involves extended periods of heavy moving and lifting of patients in a variety of situations. Generally, the work requires recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, and positioning of patients, frequently under adverse conditions or in confined areas. Paramedics may be required to spend prolonged periods in protective breathing apparatus and protective clothing during chemical, nuclear, biological, or hazardous materials
incidents/ exercises.
