This position is located at Battle Creek Veterans Affairs Medical Center (BCVAMC) performing a variety of clerical, administrative and technical duties/responsibilities in support of a funded Veterans Affairs (VA) research protocol with the intent of accomplishing the research requirements of the organization to which assigned.

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** NOTE: This is a TEMPORARY appointment not-to-exceed three (3) years. Temporary positions offer health insurance (if the employee is expected to work at least 130 hours per month for at least 90 days) but do not offer life insurance or retirement benefits and may be terminated at any time before the expiration date. The appointment to a Temporary position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment. Major Duties: Assists the Research Coordinator (when applicable) and Principal Investigator (PI) in all day-to-day operations of their study to include collecting data and providing support to the PI. Supports the Research Coordinator and PI to complete all required tasks, both clinical and administrative. Maintains a broad range of equipment, reagent, and procedures for carrying out research experiments. Possesses adequate interpersonal skills to collaborate with other researchers. Must be able to work well with others to include interns, graduate students, research assistants, research coordinators, Ph.D.'s, MD's and other professionals from varying fields. Cooperate with diverse populations of individuals. Participates in research activities with patients who have suicidal ideation, mental health diagnoses, and/or other medical conditions. Performs other assigned duties. NOTE: This is a part-time position with maximum of 16 hours per week. The salary listed represents full-time employment and will be pro-rated based on the actual number of hours worked each pay-period. Likewise, benefits and time-off accrual will also be prorated and based on your part-time work schedule. BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of this position as a Health Science Technician. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED - If you do not submit a copy of your transcript, your application may not be processed.) AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. AND In addition to meeting the basic education requirement and the English Language Proficiency, you must possess one of the following to qualify for this position. Superior Academic Achievement at the GS-7 level: (SAA) at the baccalaureate level with a major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences is fully qualifying. Applicants who wish to apply under this provision must submit proof from their educational institution that they meet one of the criteria listed below. To qualify for SAA, applicants must have completed all the requirements for a bachelor's degree in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled and meet one of the following: 1. Rank in the upper one-third of your class in the college, university or major subdivision. 2. A grade-point average of "B" (a GPA of 2.95 or higher out of a possible 4.0) for all completed undergraduate courses, or those completed in the last two years of undergraduate study. 3. A grade point average of "B+" (a GPA of 3.45 or higher out of a possible 4.0) for all courses in your major field of study, or those courses in your major completed in the last two years of undergraduate study. 4. Membership in a national honor society (other than freshman honor societies) recognized by the Association of College Honor Societies. OR SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Possess one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in federal service. To be creditable, this specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Qualifying specialized experience includes: comprehensive working knowledge of human study regulations and procedures to maintain documents such as protocols, consent forms, and adverse events reports for review by the agency Institutional Review Board for Protection of Human Subjects; and experience utilizing a variety of computer programs to create spreadsheets that perform data tracking, compiling information, and preparing meaningful reports. OR EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: A Master's or equivalent graduate degree in a major field of study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of this position as a Research Health Science Specialist. OR COMBINATION OR EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: An equivalent combination of graduate education in a major field of study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences and specialized experience as described above to meet the qualification requirements for the position. You will be rated on the following Competencies as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: ClericalCritical ThinkingProject ManagementResearch IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform portions of the work. However, there is periodic walking, standing, bending; carrying light items such as research records, instructional material, books, manuals and/or body fluids and tissue samples. Manual dexterity and a large degree of mental concentration are required. No special physical demands are required to perform the work. The environment may consist of office space, meeting or conference rooms, or patient care space. The work performed is in an office setting or similar setting requiring normal safety precautions against everyday risks and or discomforts. Employees are required to use personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks or face shields to moderate risks, or to follow procedures for minimizing risk and ensure personal safety as recommended by the medical center. Standard precautions are required but other more stringent precautions may be required depending on exposure risk. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.
