The Supervisory Nuclear Medicine Technologist serves under the general direction of the Chief of Ancillary Services and Staff Radiologists, assisting and overseeing plans and developmental activities within the Radiology department as it refers to Nuclear Medicine and Ultrasound to ensure optimum patient care, quality control, and the economically efficient performance of all activities.
Duties
Major duties include, but are not limited to:
Performs radiologic procedures in incumbent's area of licensure/certification (nuclear medicine) when staffing levels require the incumbent to do so to ensure that patient care is continued without delay or interruption.
Provides direct supervision to Nuclear Medicine technologists and Medical Instrument techs within Ancillary service at multiple VAMC sites within the BCVA catchment.
Formulates training for new and existing staff, ensures competencies are completed timely and recorded appropriately, and structures work assignments for staff under their supervision.
Conducts and or collaborates on a variety of committees, sub committees, and meetings with both internal and external customers. Ensures appropriate staff are notified of changes, updates, curtailments, etc of the programs in which they lead. Serves as chair or co-chair on a variety of committees including but not limited to the Radiation safety committee.
Directs the Radiology quality improvement program by establishing quality assurance guidelines, performance improvement, and quality management reports to continuously improve the quality of the interdepartmental activities and optimum patient quality care and quality control throughout the entirety of Ancillary service as it pertains to Radiology.
Motivates, encourages, and directs employees to produce optimum performance on a daily basis. Ensures the needs of employees in reference to materials, equipment, in-service education, and re-establishes protocol and procedures, as needed.
Works under the direction and guidance of the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) to properly document any excessive radiation exposure; to analyze instances of increased radiation exposure levels and recommend reduction measures.
Serves as a subject matter expert for all department medical center memoranda policies, service guidelines, VHA directives and subsequent SOPs, and procedure manual.
Collaborates with department heads, local and distant VAMC staff, radiologists and other customers both internal and external. Serves as a subject matter expert and direct point of to contact to solve interdepartmental problems.
Serves as faculty advisor to educational affiliates and plays a major role in constructing the externship portion of student clinical training within the VAMC Ultrasound and Nuclear Medicine programs.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm
Telework: Ad-hoc telework may be available as supervisory discretion.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Certification. All applicants must be certified in nuclear medicine technology by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) or the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (N). NMTCB or ARRT (N) certification eligibility requirements are normally satisfied by one of the following:
Completion of a NMTCB-recognized nuclear medicine technology program,OR
Completion of a nuclear medicine technology program accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology (JRCNMT), or other accrediting agencies as recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (DOE), culminating in a certificate, associate, baccalaureate, or master's degree. Educational programs must have structured clinical training sufficient to provide clinical competency in radiation safety, instrumentation, clinical procedures, and radio-pharmacy, as deemed acceptable by the NMTCB.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations GS-12:
Experience. For assignments above the journey level, the candidate must have 1 year of creditable experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level.
Assignments. For all assignments above the journey level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. NMTs at this level are fully functional as an advanced NMT and carry out their assigned tasks independently. Individuals in this assignment assume full administrative and professional responsibility for planning and directing the nuclear medicine program and technologists above the journey level at a medical center or independent outpatient clinic. They also have supervisory responsibility over a program.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. The candidate must demonstrate all the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSAs as designated by an asterisk (*):
i. *Ability to assign and evaluate work of subordinate staff as well as resolve problems that may interfere with the delivery of nuclear medicine services by staff members.
ii. Skill in providing complex nuclear medicine patient procedures.
iii. *Ability to develop and initiate new protocols which apply to current research findings.
iv. *Skill in providing administrative reports both orally and in writing [with higher level authorities (i.e., NHPP, TJC, NRC, Inspector General, executive leadership)].
v. *Ability to interview candidates for positions in the section; recommend appointments, advancements, or, when appropriate, disciplinary actions; evaluate performance; and identify continuing education and training needs.

Physical Requirements: Physical demands may involve minimal lifting usually less than 50 lbs. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. The incumbent must fully utilize all safety precautions and equipment provided by the medical center, and in compliance with local and accrediting agency requirements.
