You will serve as a MECHANICAL SYSTEMS INSPECTOR (SHIPS) in the NON-NUCLEAR INSPECTION DIVISION, QUALITY ASSURANCE OFFICE
of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.
Duties
You will inspect the fabrication and installation of mechanical components, rigging and piping systems.
You will interpret instructions and specifications of jobs at the level of journeyman or higher, to include blueprints.
You will be responsible for reception, maintenance, storage, and retrieval of assigned ship/project records for duration of projects availability.
You will conduct pre-test/final, and physical site inspections.
You will perform and evaluate the results of required non-destructive test.
You will inspect and test on board ships undergoing overhaul and at points in the shop fabrication cycle, including preventive maintenance.
You will inspect, witness, and perform test on a quality assurance basis, on mechanical and piping equipment, devices, components, and systems.
You will perform testing which adhere to the quality of workmanship required for complex submarine systems.
You will work independently, making decisions, planning operations, showing job responsibility, and exercising initiative.

- Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
- This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

* Planning the sequence of inspections during layout, fabrication installation, and testing of components and systems.
* Ability to use mechanical and structural trade tools such as machinist scales, straight edges, or torque wrenches.
* Reading and Interpreting plans, diagrams, illustrative and schematic instructional material, engineering directives, and inspection requirements involved with machining, pipe fitting, welding, insulating and testing.
* Ability to complete all inspections and test records used during performance of nuclear submarine overhaul work and testing.
* Compiling and maintaining detailed information during inspections and tests in order formulate required/accurate records.
