You will serve as a Claims Examiner in the Personnel Claims Unit (PCU) Norfolk, Admiralty and Claims (Code 15), of the Office of the Judge Advocate General.

Duties

You will analyze and evaluate all documentation and supporting evidence surrounding a claimed loss to ensure that all necessary information, evidence and forms needed for prompt and just disposition. You will analyze Government Bills of Landing, tenders of service, tariffs and other contractual liability in accordance with applicable regulations and directives. You will use an internal claims database to track and manage assigned claims. You will review offers of settlement and compromise from carriers as dictated by governing regulations and prudent judgement. You will annotate files to reflect decision-making and prepare summaries of evidence when necessary to refer the file to the Supervisory Claims Examiner. You will independently examine assigned claims and reconsideration requests. You will negotiate carrier recovery settlements with contractors.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final secret security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You must be able to travel on short notice to assist PCU disaster response mission, to include dissemination of claims information and on-site claims processing.
  • You may be required to work an alternative work schedule no more than twice monthly to answer the PCU help line requiring a shift from incumbent' s normal scheduled work hours so that the completed workday ends at 1900.

Qualifications

This position has a selective placement factor that will be used to screen out ineligible candidates. The selective placement factor is: Do you have experience in the private or public sector handling personal property claims OR experience in processing and negotiating claims and liaising with various entities? If so, please document this clearly within your resume. In addition to the selective placement factor, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing most or all of the following duties: (1) Examining assigned claims and reconsideration requests; (2) Analyzing and evaluating all documentation and supporting evidence surrounding a claimed loss to ensure that all necessary information, evidence and forms needed for disposition of claims is provided; (3) Requesting substantiating information from all claimants; (4) Calculating monies owed to claimants; and (5) Negotiating with claimant to deny or settle claims.
