You will serve as a COMPUTER SCEINTIST in the SYSTEMS TECHNOLOGY AND APPLICATIONS BRANCH, INFORMATION SYSTEMS DIVISION, INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT, of NAVOCEANO BAY ST LOUIS.

Duties

You will install, configure, modify, and maintain functionality of operating systems (OS). You will develop and maintain scripts on Linux/Unix systems for system monitoring and system administration tasks. You will manage computer systems and technologies in support of user requirements that include integrated desktop high-speed graphics capabilities, integrated network file services, and near-real time data receipt and processing. You will provide technical assistance, diagnostics, and troubleshooting support to ensure production process functionality. You will provide consultation and technical guidance to end-user project and application development planning as needed.

  • Generally, current federal employees applying for GS jobs must serve at least one year at the next lower grade level. This requirement is called time-in-grade. Time-in-grade requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • Occasional trips aboard oceanographic survey ships may be required and expose the employee to adverse weather conditions and other moderate discomforts.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • The workday may involve working shifts. The incumbent may be called in during non-duty hours for an operational need.

Qualifications

GS-09 In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: -Experience applying computer science principles and practices to operating systems. - -Experience with Linux/Unix based operating systems in the installation, configuration, basic scripting, data transport protocols, and secure cyber configurations. -Experience utilizing enterprise class Linux based operating system management capabilities. -Experience assisting higher level employees in the operation and maintenance of desktop and server operating systems, security configurations, patch installations and configurations requiring research and ingenuity to ensure end-user functionality in a computing environment. GS-07 In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: - Experience assisting with computer science principles and practices to operating systems. -Experience resolving a variety of problems, questions, or situations in the application of computer science principles and practices of Oceanographic operating systems. -Experience with Linux/Unix based operating systems in the installation, configuration, basic scripting, data transport protocols, and secure cyber configurations. Education

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess:

Bachelor's degree in computer science or bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus. All academic degrees and course work must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions.

To qualify based on education:

GS-09
2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree

GS-07
1 year of graduate-level education or superior academic achievement
