About the Position: This is a PERMANENT Range Technician position with the U.S. Army Installation Command, Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobility, and Security located at Fort Jackson, SC.
Duties
Ensure enforcement of the Fort Jackson range and training safety programs and that range and terrain safety operation briefings are conducted for all personnel involved in organizing, supervising, or controlling training.
Review, monitor, and inspect ranges, training areas, impact area gates, facilities. maneuvers land, and live fire through patrol and onsite inspection of ranges, firing points, and units and activities on the range/training area complex.
Operate the Range Facility Management Support System (RFMSS) on a government computer and local area network (LAN).
Monitor the issuance, opening, check fire, cease fire, and closing of all live fire ranges. artillery, MLRS. and mortar firing points, landing zones, training facilities, and training areas through operation/communications via multiple radio nets.
Serve as a Range Technician on heavily used live-fire ranges and training areas for the Directorate of Plans, Mobilization, and Security (DPTMS), Range Division, Operations Branch.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Incumbent is subject to an irregular tour of duty to cover 24 hour-a-day (must be able to work on rotating shifts), 7 days per week operation, to include holidays.
- Overtime may be required.
- Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license.
- Incumbent must obtain and maintain a US government motor vehicle operator's identification card (OF 346) within 30 days of hire.
- Incumbent must successfully complete Accident-Avoidance Training; receive and maintain card with issue/renewal dates within 30 days of hire.
- Incumbent must successfully complete initial US government vehicle training to include use of emergency lights, 4x4 operation, situational vehicle operations provided by US Army within 30 days of hire and complete semi-annual refresher training.
- This position is subject to the provisions of the Domestic Violence Offender Gun Ban commonly referred to as the Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 40 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- Pre-employment physical is required and an annual physical thereafter.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) reviewing, monitoring, and inspecting ranges, impact areas, impact area gates, facilities, maneuvers land, and live fire through patrol and on site inspection of ranges, firing points, and units and activities on the range/training area complex; 2) monitoring the issuance, opening, check fire, cease fire, and closing of all live fire ranges and; 3) scheduling ranges via computer systems such as Range Facility Management Support System (RFMSS). This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).
