You will serve as a Welder in the Structural Shop, Production Resources Department, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine.

Duties

You will weld in all positions, with various electric arc or gas welding processes; you may perform flame cutting. You will work with various types of metals and alloys of varying sizes, shapes and thickness, applicable to the construction, repair and maintenance of submarines, ships, utilities and facilities of the activity. You will lay out work from blueprints, specifications or oral instructions and read/follow written technical work instructions such as TWD’s, TGI’s, UREL’s, PI’s etc. You will operate various types of electrical arc-welding and cutting equipment by the manual, semiautomatic methods; i.e., gas-metal-arc, gas-tungsten-arc, submerged-arc, manual-metal arc welding, plasma-arc cutting, brazing and flame cutting.

Requirements

  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • Occasional overtime may be required.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to do the work of a Welder, WG-3703-10 without more than normal supervision performing duties including: Determining the proper welding method and the correct materials to use such as, electrodes, filler-wire, flux, etc. Demonstrating the skill to weld metal parts and structures that may vary in size, shape, and thickness from .025 inches or less to several inches thick requiring multiple welding passes. Operating various types of electrical arc-welding and cutting equipment by manual, semi-automatic methods. Determining how various metals and alloys such as different kinds of steel, aluminum, cast iron, nickel, monel-metals, brass, bronze, copper, magnesium, beryllium, and titanium react to different processes and methods.
