You will serve as a WELDER SUPERVISOR in the STRUCTURAL SHOP, PRODUCTION RESOURCES DEPARTMENT of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will be responsible for planning, coordinating and directing a variety of related work operations. You will be responsible for requisitioning necessary tools, materials, equipment, and arranging assistance to other trades when required. You will be responsible for ensuring proper work from subordinates and inspecting work for quality. You will be responsible for enforcing safety, fire, other regulations, and maintaining good housekeeping practices. You will be responsible for ensuring that tools, equipment, and materials are properly used, stored, and maintained.

Requirements

  • Supervisors in the executive branch have a heightened personal responsibility for advancing government ethics. You will be required to review the 14 General Principles of Ethical Conduct at 5 CFR 2635.101.
  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
  • Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • You may be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO LEAD OR SUPERVISE * Performing welding on various types of metals and alloys such as Class P-1 piping, A-1, A-2, and A-F pressure vessels. * Conducting inspections of welds in the Reactor Coolant, Associated systems, and components for the Naval Nuclear propulsion plants. * Ability to perform welding in radiologically controlled areas where ionized radiation is present. * Planning sequence of work operations, assigning work, and completing the scheduled work in a timely manner. * Reading and interpreting blueprints, welding work documents, and following proper welding procedures.
